Struggle should be, "I can't figure out how to make fusion energy work," not "I can't figure out how to not live in poverty despite being surrounded by abundance."
@scottsantens I've often felt that, aside from the obvious impacts to one's health and well-being, systemic problems like poverty, racism, misogyny, etc. hold a society down because people whose energy and time is taken up managing the effects of these societal ills are less able to find the energy, time, or resources to invest in their brilliance. As a result, we all suffer.

"The Japanese government is pushing ahead with a plan to make #Japan’s publicly funded research output free to read. This month, the science ministry will assign funding to universities to build the infrastructure needed to make research papers free to read on a national scale. The move follows the ministry’s announcement in February that researchers who receive government funding will be required to make their papers freely available to read on the institutional repositories from January 2025." #OpenAccess
@Teri_Kanefield They deleted the post, but I sent a respectful comment to them nonetheless. I'm sorry that happened to you and it's disappointing to see the same thing happening on here that happened on twitter.
I know most of you are not as much of a dummy as I am, but there will be a few like me who didn't know:
The upskilling platform LinkedIn Learning (previously Lynda.com) for which pricing starts at about $27 NZD/month, is FREE with your Auckland Library card (and many other library cards too.)
So there you go.
As if I needed another reason to love the library.
We know the "motherhood penalty" is very real. Have any non-mothers felt discriminated against at work because it was assumed that you would have children (and thus caretaking responsibility) someday? If you have children now, did you experience this before you became a mother?
@amydiehl When I interviewed with the local fire department, they asked me during the interview if I had any children (yes) and if I planned to have more (probably) 🤷🏻♀️
I knew it was illegal of them to ask, but what was I going to do? Anyhoo, I placed 3rd and was out of the running, but still.
