I’ve been dispatched to the first outdoor Dane County Farmer’s Market of 2024 to get some treats for the family!

@Tim_Eagon While we were seeding vegetable seeds at work last month, I ended up with a bag of Trinidad Scorpion in my hands.

Thought it was a really weird name for a tomato or paprika, but a coworker reminded me that we do also grow some chili.

Probably that was one of them.

Yora,
@Yora@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon Oh man. Apparently it's not just hot, it's ultra hyper hot. 🌶️ 🔥

Why are we selling this in a regular plant store in Northern Germany with an otherwise unremarkable selection of tomatoes and cucumbers? 😅

Yora, (edited )
@Yora@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon I just think this went from 0 to 1,600,000 very quickly.

I really need to know which greenhouse they ended up in. We usually don't take them over to the store until they have a few fruits on them. And it won't be an issue if we pick one from three or four plants.
Now I really want to try those out with some coworkers. 😭

    @LeviKornelsen It never occured to me that this is such a hugely successful social structure for civilizations throughout history.

    Makes sense though. It's the easiest way to administer things.

    If you take a big-ass list of conspiracy theories and replace whatever force is supposedly behind it with "this is a result / side effect of the same rich assholes you've already heard of trying to get richer", you will make a small number of them correct, and many, many more will take a big step towards being believable.

    @LeviKornelsen Otherwise it's the CIA.

    Even the dumbest most outlandish conspiracy theory becomes plausible if you attribute it to the CIA.

    Damn, I was suddenly reminded that the Tech-Bro Hypes about how a new technology would revolutionize daily life and society didn't start with the dotcom bubble in the late 90s.
    It goes back at leas to the early 80s.

    Robot servants at home were the future, man!

    And this whole current AI fad looks indistinguishable to me.

    If you want ethical AI (and I sure do), consider that it's extremely likely we won't get it until after the current craze implodes and the market bubble washes away; the people running the show have made it clear that's not what they're after.

    Supporting the current awful platforms just delays the day we'll see it get decent.

    Since my in-laws were visiting for my son's birthday, which coincides with Easter, we just did confetti eggs in our front yard. What a messy delight! I'll be finding confetti in my hair and clothes forever...

    I think calling the multitude of playable human-likes in an RPG "species" is POTENTIALLY much better than calling them "races".

    But as soon as you do that, you're saying overtly that this is a biological grouping, and therefore that traits assigned to them are biological in nature, and you should know that.

    If you then assign cultural traits to a species without calling them out as such, you have made... Let's call it... an error.

    Yora,
    @Yora@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen I settled on "peoples".

    Dear console developers,

    your game's UI needs to be readable from 4 meters away.

    My living room is not very big and my screen is not very small. But the text on the UI that looks good when viewed on a huge screen from 40 cm away is unreadable when you move it from desk to couch.

    The Witcher 3 and Conan Exiles both make me frequently get off my couch to walk up to the screen to make out what most of the regular text says, and there is no setting for larger letters.

    You fail at your job!

    @Yora@dice.camp avatar

    In #crpg #gamedev, what is actually the purpose of the player's character advancing stats through XP or skill increases?

    It's expected if an RPG and player enjoy the Ding!, but advancement could just as well be achieved through better equipment and gaining new special abilities. Which is much more flexible as you can try out other playstyles by changing your gear, without stretching the disbelieve like letting characters undo their growth and respec their stats.

    Yora, to gamedev
    @Yora@dice.camp avatar

    There seems to be some consensus among #crpg design enthusiasts that the best open-world RPGs are Morrowind and Gothic. Both of which are over 22 years old now.

    By this point, I believe many of the writing about Morrowind and Gothic having the best open-world design were not even born when they came out.

    #gamedev

    Yora,
    @Yora@dice.camp avatar

    I would guess that perhaps the reason we have not really seen any major games that take the lessons that countless reviewers and critics have taken from these games and applied them in their own design is that open-world games tend to be bigger budget productions, and big-budget games are not designed for players but for sharholders.

    We're heading into a time when AI is so very, very good for shareholders and corporate bottom lines that companies are going to continue to try to force feed it to us with a big grin, even though the vast majority of us don't want it.

    We're going to see a lot of condescending messaging in the next year or two about how we just don't understand, and they're sure we're going to love AI when we can see how great it is for us.

    Yora,
    @Yora@dice.camp avatar

    @montecook And then we'll reach once again the point of "Hey, remember how everyone used to hype up AI?"

    The only tech revolution I can remember that actually stuck around was Blue Ray making DVD obsolete.

    Yora, to VideoGames
    @Yora@dice.camp avatar

    Reports about the #videogames industry regularly bring up how the cost of developing games is sharply increasing these days.
    But I think what they are talking about is budgets increasing. Of course, if you give a developer hundreds of millions of dollars to make a game, all of that will be spend.

    Yet at the same time, a game that would have been considered cutting edge and big budget 20 years ago can now be made as a hobby project.

    Exploding budgets are a choice.

    Got an HTML question.

    I want to have an image that is 480px wide. (Check)
    Under that, I want a caption that is centered within the 480px wide area beneath the image.

    I think it should be <figcaption width="480">, but apparently that doesn't work.

    How is this supposed to be done?

    #html

    Yora,
    @Yora@dice.camp avatar

    Okay, I got it to work:
    <figure style="width: 360px;"><img src="url">
    <figcaption style="width: 360px;">Caption</figcaption>
    </figure>

    Somehow, class="post__image post__image--left" screwed everything up.

    Thanks to everyone who helped pointing me along the way.

    Yora,
    @Yora@dice.camp avatar

    @Tijn What's wrong with that, and what's better with other approaches?

    Yora,
    @Yora@dice.camp avatar

    @Tijn Yes, but then how would you have one image on a page align left and another image align right?

    Yora,
    @Yora@dice.camp avatar

    @Tijn Okay, that helps, seeing it all together.

    I often find it hard to make sense of how things are to be used from only a single tag being covered at a time on those W3 pages.
