Today was a huge milestone in our quest to federate #Flipboard and tear down the walls around our own walled garden.

First, we launched a new version of Flipboard for iOS and Android which brings the promise of two way federation to life. Now when a federated Flipboard user curates, people in the fediverse can reply, favorite, boost or follow those Flipboard users who will in turn see that activity in their usual notifications tab. Even better, Flipboard users can directly reply to people in the fediverse -- and very soon they will also be able to follow each other.

Second, we federated some of our best curators today who are actively curating more than 10,000 magazines about everything from climate change to kale smoothie recipes. I'm grateful to our many curators and the service they provide to so many others who want to find the best content about a shared interest. I know our curators are excited to have millions more people who could potentially benefit from their curation. I also know that people in the fediverse will give a warm welcome to these curators. Especially now that everyone can hear and talk to each other over what was once two totally separate networks but now increasingly are in one and the same #fediverse.

ToSDR,

@mike @zdl please notify us if you do! Its always great when services improve their ToS!

#Avast sold data collected by a "privacy tool". Let this be a reminder to actually read the terms and not just the marketing!

23andMe just updated their terms of service

limiting the time in which users can take legal action and adding a class action waver.
If you are a 23andMe user you have 30 days to opt-out. This comes after millions of user data including DNA was leaked.

🧵 1/7
#ToSDR Funding Round
We have avoided making this post for the longest time, however, we have reached a point where ToS;DR is at risk.

What's happening?

Our server cost totals to around 9500$ a year. ToS;DR simply does not have the funds to finance this and thus our team members pay for the majority of it out of their own pocket.

ToSDR,

🧵 2/... This has been fine for a long time but as ToS;DR grows and expands (which is what we want and believe is best for our project) it is simply not working anymore.
We are fine with contributing to the majority of the sum, however, this is risque for the future and your support guarantees the safety of ToS;DR.

ToSDR,

🧵 3/... Why are the servers so expensive?
ToS;DR gets roughly 75 million requests per month. We do not know this number exactly (as we do not track users), but this is calculated based on the bandwidth that goes out per month.
This costs a lot of money to maintain so it properly scales, is always online and we have backup servers in case one goes down.

ToSDR,

🧵 4/...Soon, our long awaited, most anticipated feature launches: Browser Extension 2.0. We are estimating in our first month alone this extension will cost us 440000 API Requests/Month or more.

ToSDR,

🧵 5/...

Why should I care?

ToS;DR is not just a service you see. It is not just an annotation tool. It is a tool giving users around the world more privacy and transparency where big corporations simply fail.
We have been running for more than 11 years (wow!) and want to continue on for a long time in the future. However, as it stands, ToS;DR cannot exist without your help.
This is not just like Wikipedia, where we'd be fine if no one donated for a year. This is more dire.

ToSDR,

🧵 6/... ## What happens if no one donates?
We will try to keep ToS;DR alive but we have to cut back on many components. The first to go, for example, would be our Matrix Server that many people (maybe even you!) use. This would continue on and ToS;DRs quality, reliability and more would suffer.

ToSDR,

🧵 7/7
Please help keep ToS;DR alive!

If everyone who saw this only donated 1$, our funding would be secured for years. With 2$, our future development would be funded as well.

Our OpenCollective link to Donate: https://opencollective.com/tosdr
If you wish to contribute with other methods, please slide in our dms, thank you for reading this message which really was hard to write and I hope you understand.

Boosts are very much appreciated!

Our curators reviewed Unity's #termsOfService and #privacy policy in record time.

Unity has recently been criticized for changing the pricing model and removing their ToS from Github.

More about that here: https://gamingonlinux.com/2023/09/unity-introduces-new-fees-for-game-devs-based-on-revenue-and-game-installs/

And our full summary of Unity's ToS: https://tosdr.org/en/service/2768

All their additional ToS together need 172 pages of paper and with 113.684 words its longer than the Hobbit.

Lots of love to the curators!!!

In case it isn't glaringly obvious, the next frontier in protecting our data is denying services that want to use us to train ML models. And no adblocker is going to do the job. Someone's gonna have to read every ToS, Privacy Statement, and EULA to find out who's doing what.

ToSDR,

@hugo @mttaggart @BradRubenstein @jancborchardt if a document mentions that your personal data is used for training, the case "Your personal data is used for automated decision-making, profiling or AI training" (https://edit.tosdr.org/cases/504) can be applied, which is a blocker (means very bad).
