Another comparision video between the original 1997 release and the 2023 remaster for Quake 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5FQ0RL1Yxc

Today I finshed the Quake 2 remaster episode Call of the Machine and it is mostly good, but there are some seriously slaughter map moments that just don't work. Limiting your weapons and resources is not that bad, but throwing 20+ enemies at once at you isn't that much fun.

What a beautiful and at the same time weird phase for electronic music the end of the 90s were. Case in point Orbital - The Box: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJnve05CnNE

Have YOU got what it takes?

High hopes for the #Amiga 600's success and plenty of SEGA Mega Drive ad energy in this UK commercial.

The A600 was my first Amiga, handed down after the second-hand 500+ that my parents picked up for me kaputt within a couple of days and was refunded. They decided to buy a newly-released 1200 instead and give me the 600.

I have quite a few 'miggy magazines from 92 and 93 and there were definitely high hopes from Commodore that it would be a success. The PCMCIA card slot features heavily in discussions prior to its release and it was believed that it would supplant the floppy disk as its primary storage medium for games and applications and would eliminate software piracy - ever a bone of contention for Amiga software houses.

Bit of a boondoggle in the end, and heartily disliked within Commodore itself, with David Pleasance of Commodore UK quoted as calling it a complete and utter screwup.

TCD,

@SharkaBytes David wanted an 'A300' which would be a lower cost Amiga variant basically aimed at C64 owners hesitant to switch to the Amiga. Commodore Germany wanted to have something that they could market as an 'updated' Amiga and went for additions like PCMCIA that meant it wouldn't be as cheap as David hoped. Releasing the A1200 later that year made the whole thing pretty much pointless. By the end of 1992 the financial issues of Commdore were also out in the public, so in hindsight the A600 in the form it was brought to market really didn't make much sense.

TCD,

@SharkaBytes There's a thread about it on EAB right now and it's fascinating that some people really think that pushing machines out at a loss really made any sense. An AGA machine in 1991 would have made a huge difference even at a higher price point. At least in my opinion :)

The whole timeline between 1990 and 1996 about the Amiga is pretty interesting. Escom releasing the A1200 with just an (partially) incompatible disk drive in 1995 and announcing a new machine a month before failing to sell the brand... it's mind boggling.

That's why I love to dig through old magazine ads for games: End of 1990 exchange rates for UK Pounds, French Francs and German Marks (approximation) immortalised in the last three adverts here https://amiga.abime.net/games/view/the-immortal#scans

Played through the first unit. They fixed the recoil on the machine gun :D That thing is actually useful now. The maps have some tweaks here and there. The enemy AI feels a bit smarter. Overall a really good overhaul of the game and it's great that you don't have to pay for it if you already own the game on Steam.

In 1992 our Commodore Amiga platform game Hoi was released worldwide on two 3.5 inch diskettes, but as the US-based publisher didn't pay the royalties, we decided to release an AGA chipset remix for free in 1993.

Here's a full longplay video:

Download the game for free here (Amiga emulator needed):
