Terry Pratchett’s “Making Money” taught me enough economics to know that individual debt and national debt are two different things.

When money is not in circulation, it’s not being used to pay for goods and services…it’s just…sitting there being hoarded.

This is why I think the velocity of money should be a key economic indicator. Money moving around and doing work is what makes an economy better for everyone. When it starts to pool in the economy it slows down and benefits only a few.

This is another thing I learned from “Making Money”

It’s the third rule of Anarchy Camp: If you see someone taking charge you’re expected to beat them.

I could see Apple buying it. The form factor makes sense, it’s the fact that it relies on AI and has its own cell connection are the main issues. If I could tap it and have Siri take dictation or take a picture of something to get more information it would be pretty neat.

As someone who doesn’t wear a watch, having a little fob that I could use to activate Siri without digging my phone out of my pocket would be pretty nice. If it were a phone peripheral it probably would have been a lot better.

I’d drop the projector interface, as cool as it is, since you have a phone for that. Maybe make it a pendant as well as a pin.

Apple’s got a lot of experience with using tiny speakers in loud places, so I bet they could figure out something maybe using directional microphones. Plus, again, you’ve got the phone so you can use the headphones.

Airpods don’t have a camera though. 90% of my photos are of things I need to remember, like a shopping list or a specific product I need to get Having to dig out (or find) my phone to do that is a pain.

And I don’t have Airpods because I’d lose them, one by one, and the replacements are twice the price as another pair of perfectly workable Bluetooth headphones.

Stop thinking that you vote “for” someone in a FPTP system. You don’t. You vote against the guy you don’t like.

It sucks, and I hate it, but don’t delude yourself into thinking otherwise. We’re playing a badly-designed game with a shitty controller and we’re only allowed to press a button once a year at best.

Think Twitch Plays Pokemon, but with a lot more trolls and no moderation. There will be a constant stream of people voting to do something stupid and destructive, so you spend all of your time voting against them.

Oh, and their votes count for more, so they can win even if there’s fewer of them. All we can ever hope to do is try to stop them and hope they don’t fuck everything up and give themselves even more power before the next time we’re allowed to pick a move.

Yay America. Greatest democracy in the world right there.

Trump plans to claim sweeping powers to cancel federal spending: In a second term, allies said the former president would look at funding cuts for the World Health Organization and green energy (wapo.st)

Classically, Congress held the power of the purse, able to both bar and require spending. This imposed a significant limit on Presidential power. With a bought court supporting him, Trump would have significant ability to essentially chart power as a king.

One reason I prefer watching older shows is that the format made the writing so concise. They can fit two plots and some character development into 42 minutes, unlike newer shows where it’s twenty minutes of dialog and narration every episode. For example, the last season of Discovery had as much happen as two episodes of TNG.

Nevermind, it would probably just start playing ads.

Several PA House Republicans boo officers who defended Capitol on Jan. 6 | Harry Dunn and Aquilino Gonell were invited to PA’s House of Representatives — but several GOP lawmakers booed and walked out (wapo.st)

“I heard some hissing and I saw about eight to 10 of my Republican colleagues walk out angrily as they were announced as police officers from the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6,” state Rep. Arvind Venkat (D) said in a phone interview Thursday. “I was shocked and appalled,” he added. According to Venkat, the commotion lasted...

A new poll shows trouble for Biden with young voters, especially among voters of color (www.npr.org)

It found that just one-third of all young Americans said they would back Biden if the election was held at the time the survey was conducted. The poll also reflects a virtual tie in the race. Biden leads former President Donald Trump by just two points, and 34% of respondents are currently backing a third-party candidate or said...

The fact that people block ozma when this is a perfectly valid political post about a very concerning topic would be hilarious if the consequences weren’t so dire.

They’ll ignore the canary in the coalmine and then wake up after Election Day and wonder what the fuck happened. Again.
