The foreground is a grassed area with white and blue daisies. In the centre is a floating mastodon with a quiffed hair and a curled tusk. The mastodon is held in the air by strings wrapped around its body. These strings are held in the air by red and yellow birds.

Diving into #freecad - wish me luck.

4 x AA Batteries == 6v
3 x AA Batteries == 4.5v

4 x AA batteries through LDO -> 3.3v 8 months still going.

3 x AA batteries through same LDO ->3.3v died at 6 months

is it just because even though they're in series there's one more "cell's worth of mAh" available? i'm expecting more wastage from the 4 cells.

The device is on for <2 seconds, then hibernates.

Ok, sorry another n00b question again.
What's the downside of using huge numbers for my resistors in a voltage divider. I can't see any. Even based on price of the components.
There appear to be a lot of upsides for a battery operated device.

Example circuit, hover over the resistors for more detail on current / wattage etc use

@NAB I'm willing to try it with the canon one I have.

Is there any reason not to look at the Creality Sermoon V1 Pro 3D Printer? I have a CR20 Pro and it's driving me insane - I can't get the bed leveland I can't get the z height sorted out. I just want to use it as a tool, I don't want to have to spend half my life tuning and fiddling with the thing. If not the Sermoon, anything similar? Bamboo labs P1S is too spendy. Creality have a deal on ATM just over £200 for the Sermoon

After 12 years of flawless service my #Sidi Courier #motorcycle boots have started to fail. Leather holding one of the clasps gave out. I can't complain they've survived 12 years of winter / rain and have never leaked. I may try a 5-min epoxy fix but I'm doubtful of success.
Shame they no longer make them, but I guess if they last 12 years....

Where are people in the UK getting their components from for reasonable prices? I've just priced up LCSC vs Mouser for some 0603 caps and the price difference is astonishing. I know there are overheads but the difference isn't a x 10 factor, it's way beyone that.

Can someone give me a TL;DR on porting landline numer to voip but keeping landline with my current #ISP I can see there might be potential issues, I'm just not sure of the process and if I've thought about all the potential problems.

Self host searchXNG - when there's an outage you still get search results - albeit from a limited subset of engines.

*edit because you have to get the name right?!!

ScaredyCat, to opensource

Does anyone have any recommendations for cross-platform, self hosted note taking apps.

Logseq is tilting me because of its forced bullet-point layout but I so like the simplistic markdown document/folder arrangement so I can just sync over multiple devices.

anyone know of an application like barrier for #linux and #osx to share keyboard and mouse. Barrier seems to be broken demanding ssl certs even with the option turned off.

How tight should XT60 connectors be? I'm wrestling trying to separate a pair and well, it requires a LOT of force. #electronics

My boiler keeps repeatedly locking out so I decided I'd build a little device to tell me when it does. Nothing spectacular, just EPS32 + LDR so that it alerts when the lockout light turns on.
In typical, "watched kettle" fashion, it hasn't locked out since.

Has anyone built a #lora messenger device (with keyboard and screen? Wondering if LILYGO® TTGO Lora is worth a go but if someone's built something better, would like to take a look at that.

ScaredyCat, to Vintage

I am, as yet, unsure which circle of hell should be reserved for people who remove original clock movements on #vintage #clocks, replacing them with quartz ones.

ScaredyCat, to esp32

Compiling the same code, same libs, same esp32, same version of esp32 arduino core under Arduino and Platformio giving me different results.

Arduino, pushed OTA and the SHT31 gives expected values 22 degrees C, humidity 53.14%.

Platformio, pushed OTA and the SHT31 tell me the temperature is 130 degrees C, humidity 100%

This could get interesting.

I can't get over how much better this is than the CR20-Pro I had. It's just churning out print after print perfectly. I've printed stuff that's upright, that comes out perfect, that I'd never even attempt on the CR20 because I knew it'd just fail. I've walked away from a 5 hour print and checked in on it a couple of times whereas I'd never even have left the room with the CR20.

ScaredyCat, to debian

So #debian users how do you cope with the old packages in the repos, do you all switch to experimental or somehting?

I need to find out if I've been doing this wrong for my entire adult life.

Oh god. The pea in the oil sightglass was stuck because of a spider. We have not oil. We have no heating or hot water. Oil wont be here for a week at least.

ScaredyCat, to esp32

Does anyone have a method/library for #esp32 to perform dns lookups of TXT records ? Can't find a lib for anything other than basic hostname lookups.
