RBWells,

Fruit bats are so cute, but I think my favorite are the ones who fly crazy in our evenings in the city chowing down on mosquitoes, I believe they are Little Brown Bats.

Summer is the worst season of the year, isn't?

The sun sucks, being forced to shower like every 4 hours just to not feeling sweaty, the fucking mosquitoes, the fact you can’t wear anything that you want anymore due the heat, the people outside… The fucking beach. I try to avoid it… The fucking sand, not a fan of it. Is scratchy, harsh, annoying and it infiltrates in...

RBWells, (edited )

I live in Florida, so it’s hot but I LOVE our summers. We get warm mornings, afternoon thunderstorms, and warm evenings with lightning all through the sky, it is so beautiful. I like also how nobody at the beach is modest or worried about looks (I’m not in Miami) so you see all types in swimsuits.

So summer is my favorite mostly because of the rain, but I do like the beach.

ETA I also like the longer days and shorter nights.

When did you know a career was either the perfect or the worst match for your personality?

I’m trying to give someone advice on choosing a career that will suit them better than the one they’re in and hate. I wanted to get together a list of good questions for them to ask themselves so they can use the answers to compare options like “do you prefer to work sitting or moving around,” “do you want to not work...

RBWells,

Well certainly not the career aptitude testing in high school, which put me in ministry (the religious kind), philosophy, or military.

I was a cashier at a bunch of places and kept ending up working in the back office, then developing ways to do the bookkeeping on the computer (this was so long ago they were using paper ledgers). I did accounting systems for years, but doing accounting now, with coworkers I like.

I would not call it a passion but an aptitude. And as my former boss says - so much better to have a job you don’t love with great coworkers, than a job you enjoy with people you don’t.

RBWells,

Lemmy, overall. There are things I miss from Reddit but whenever I browse it now it’s just so full of advertising.

RBWells,

Indoors, 76-78f (25)

Outdoors, I love our summer weather pattern. Warm evenings, mornings getting hotter, then beautiful thunderstorms in the afternoon to cool things off, nights usually more clear but often you can see lightning in the sky, dramatic and beautiful. Ideally I would want the top temp at about 90f (32) and evening around the 78f (25). Lately it’s been more like 99f (37) on the hottest days, which also means the heat pump can’t get the indoors to the 25 easily.

Hot and dry sucks, cold and rainy sucks. But tropical with dramatic rain is beautiful, so enjoyable. Our winter is what people visit to see, it’s mild and cool; but summer is my favorite even here. Tropical storms are also wonderful, the trees bending in the wind, the rain filling the streets and afterwards all the frog sounds.

RBWells,

Whistle.

Tell right from left without thinking about it.

Read a map, unless it’s oriented the way I am facing. My mind will not flip it.

RBWells,

I can’t navigate politics at all. Have done ok working at startups though, some offices are not at all political. Where I work, we can fix other people’s processes if we think of a better way, we work with other departments, I don’t have to go through my manager to talk to your manager to get to you, can go directly to you. Can talk to the CEO, to ex- employees, nobody is protective of their work, nobody is angling for my job.

RBWells,

I don’t know if nobody wants the job but I knew a guy who did stucco and absolutely loved doing it. Standing outside and wiping stucco onto walls was his joy.

RBWells,

I do indeed most ardently hate. Begone!

RBWells,

No, a correlation between being black and being arrested for weed. In my city, they made the legal status of the drug indeterminate and gave cops DISCRETION on whether to arrest or cite someone for having pot. Not a felony now in any event, misdemeanor or civil citation or nothing but how do you think this discretion will be used?

RBWells,

I don’t order delivery of anything but pizza and only on the website of the pizza place, hate door dash and Uber eats. We occasionally get fast food Chinese or Panera or Starbucks but they all have mobile website and we order and pick up.

All those services are terrible, the food is never fresh, gets left at the wrong address or not at all, it’s not good or at least not good here.

RBWells,

If you got already a second opinion, same as the first one, it seems solid. I guess my question is, is the disorder causing you distress or making it hard to live your life? I’ve had three people in my life with schizophrenia but it became so severe they couldn’t function.

If you are functioning well enough in the world, and not in distress, you have time to try treatments. Even if you don’t feel different (that’s better than feeling worse, right?). Keep going to whichever doctor you liked better. Let them know how you are doing so they can adjust the treatment.

RBWells,

Hope springs eternal in the hearts of women.

RBWells,

Just ate a kimchi grilled cheese sandwich for breakfast, yum. With a dip of gochujang, mustard, soy sauce, kimchi brine.

There is a Mexican fruit salad with pineapple, mango, jicama, onion, and cotija sharp cheese, in an orange juice dressing, it is so good with onion, I would not have expected that.

RBWells,

I don’t even like sweet potato, but baked Stokes Purple sweet potato with blue cheese, olive oil, salt and pepper and pumpkin seeds is amazing.

RBWells,

That’s a glorious clear ice cube and foam from shaking the drink.

If you have a pill to spare, though, I’m in. Or a piece of cheese, for that matter.

RBWells,

I’m indifferent about jewelry on anybody, male or female. Like, the piece itself can be nice but I don’t ever seem to think it enhances the look of the person, except sometimes earrings. Very occasionally I think it detracts from the look of the person but almost always just neutral.

You are the arbiter of what looks good on you, though. If you like it, that’s all that matters.

RBWells,

Yeah I had a chiropractor (the woo woo kind, not the ‘have you been in a car accident’ kind) who could twist my head and make something crack and then I’d get no migraines for a year or more. So I would go back once every year or two when they came back, and he’d do it again. Nothing else has ever worked like that. $40 a year to prevent migraines?

He was older and is retired and I have not ever been able to trust any other chiropractor to be able to do that.

And one time my mom had shoulder pain and her doctor sent her to a chiropractor and they fixed that.

I don’t think it’s magic but also don’t think it’s nothing. Like massage or other physical manipulations it can do some things.

RBWells,

Evolution and Nelly’s are the only brands that get close, but nothing is like fresh squeezed (obviously, same thing with any citrus juice, right?) so I just make some when I want it, by squeezing some oranges. We can still get the juicing oranges here, not year round though.

RBWells,

There are greening tolerant (not resistant) varieties developed already, yes of course biologists have been and are urgently working on it. I have a “sugar bell” tree, that’s one of them.

RBWells,

Valencia are good juicing oranges, but messy for eating. Navel oranges are dryer and less flavor but great to eat because so big and so easy to peel and section.

Fresh orange juice is just a whole different thing, it’s not like the bottled ones. If you juiced the navel oranges it would still taste more like the fresh juice from juicing oranges than the bottled juice does.

RBWells,

I am an avid reader of books, and not a movie buff, but I stand on this hill with you. The LOTR movies are better than the books.

RBWells,

There are some covers of songs I like much more than the originals, a lot are Bob Dylan but also:

Neverwhere was a TV show before it was a book, I like the book more.

Anyone have luck with a hair growth *inhibitor*? Especially my fellow gentledudes who could be mistaken for sasquatch after skipping a day of shaving.

I’ve heard of things like Nair that make it fall out… if that was a one-and-done solution I’d be all for it, but I’m hoping for something that slows or stops it from growing....

RBWells,

This is my husband’s face hair strategy as well. Clippers most of the time, shaving the edges occasionally. I don’t like beards but got beat over the head with images of hot guys with stubble for long enough it just looks good to me now.

Your comment about the long johns made me laugh remembering my friend - he had very pale skin, very dark hair and such hairy legs, one time he shaved a racing stripe down the sides of his legs :)

RBWells,

As Red Green put it:

If women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy!

The direct analogue would be “men should single handedly provide income to support a family”. So not farming necessarily, but men are pressured to be something other than just men, they get defined by their jobs more. Be a businessman, a farmer, a soldier. Women get defined more by their relationships to other people - a mom, a wife. Both of these are problematic in their own way.
