I am a small irish devil who makes poor art with my stubby hopeless fingers. I also like RPGs that don't exist.

You know what's odd?

Optimizers around 5e say that a +1 is about a ~5% increase in success, but that assumes that the range of results is 1-20.

As we know the range of results in the game actually stretches from about 1-40 and the range of difficulties is 5 to 35. Neither of those would be a range of 1 to 20.

So all the arguments about optimization are about a ~2-3% gain.

Printdevil,
@Printdevil@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan @foolishowl Optimisers though are really the same people who weighed out the peanuts on aircraft and decided that 2-3% gain is really worth it "Over an entire career of gaming"

Oh dear me. I just visited the Mandela Effect subreddit to read a post and comments about how "the sun used to be yellow, and now it's white," and I think a lot of these folks are not doing well.

If someone describes feeling like everyone, including their family and friends, is avoiding a topic and trying to deceive them, well... "scientists replaced the sun, and it's a conspiracy" is not the most obvious conclusion.

Printdevil,
@Printdevil@dice.camp avatar

@artemis I was at the inaugural lecture of a new professor, and his presentation was about how our social relationship with children has changed and how this is evidenced in the visual dynamics in family photographs across that time. He built a whole edifice about the lack of emotions shown in early photography and the formality. I got to ask "Isn't that just because you had to sit still longer for old process cameras?" and the facilitator for the event literally said "No further questions"

@hypnogoria I love ladybird books, they are little fragments of cognitive architecture of youth. Like the Greek Mythology ones. Almost hand in hand with Armada Ghost collections as cozy memories of growing up reading.

@hypnogoria I still have those two with meticulous ill scribbled notes about the monsters in them, and somewhat mysteriously on the inside cover of Book 2 "The boy in the big house is called Giles"

It's less of a folklore and more pure alchemy, but I was always taken with the variation between practical and philosophical alchemy, and I think the former was brilliantly epitomised by Thomas Norton's Ordinalle of Alchimy, where he tries without thermometers to define effects like "the temperature at which duck fat melts"

Found an old coin when tidying up.

It's a Victorian Penny dated 1900.

Well worn, with a depiction of 'Britannica' on one side and and older Queen Victoria Profile on the other.

Occurred to me today that this coin is (currently) around 124 years old.

Imagine the pockets and people and places it's seen!

Printdevil,

@Faintdreams What I like about those pennies is they have a size and weight that's just.. different. They feel like treasure coins.

I miss Maplins.

Maplins was a UK electrical store chain that sold consumer electronics, and was pretty much the only high street chain for any hobbiest

You could walk into a store with something, take it to back desk - say "what is this and how do I connect it to this and not blow myself up / start a fire" and they could tell you AND sell you the required kit - at a reasonable price!

Nowhere does this any more outside of Maker clubs/groups.

[current Maplins online is a zombie brand]

Printdevil,
@Printdevil@dice.camp avatar

@Faintdreams Once they were owned by Rutland private equity the writing was always on the wall for Maplins. I used to get lovely electronics kits from them in the 1980s. Very sad when they started the slow progression of owner after owner then.. gone.

finally have my server running about the way I want. next thing will be linking it up to another server to create a tiny little irc network.

it really isn't hard to set up either this ircd (ngircd) or one of the alternatives in debian, the only thing I have issues with is how it interacts with when you try to restart it. but that's a systemd thing. and maybe I'm just bad at that.

otherwise you can just install the package and have a working irc server just like that.
