New genome size record!!! 160Gbp. In a plant, of course.

The sheer amount of academia-specific spam my mostly dormant university email account gets boggles the mind. There must be a huge business in fake conferences and fake journals for me to get >5 trash, but academia-specific spam emails per day

PhilippBayer,
@PhilippBayer@genomic.social avatar

it depresses me for the future of academics.
internationally, publishing papers is the KPI of choice for all academics. without that international pressure, this fraud would not exist.
an university cannot change how its researchers are evaluated, and thus treated, when the entire global research community evaluates itself via, and clings to, these meaningless metrics.

How long have I been seeing articles like 'scientific metrics are pointless. There's too much publishing!'
10 years? 20? Has anything changed? No, things got worse every year. Nothing is going to change but keep publishing those articles i guess

PhilippBayer,
@PhilippBayer@genomic.social avatar

@Fischblog and there the problems start, don't they? Nobody knows 'what actually matters' means so to stem the tide we invent metrics upon metrics, all useless. But we dug this hole and we can only dig deeper

one thing I am learning about getting older is how many different kinds of stress you can go under!

immediate stress, like a danger, or almost subconscious stress, like always knowing your position's funding is running out in 2 years, or impending-doom stress, when you don't know what is going to happen to your job tomorrow; or financial stress, when you don't know how to feed your children;

so many stresses! what a life!

why is CTRL-Z a universal hotkey for UNDO, but the REDO button is not universal (sometimes CTRL-SHIFT-Z, sometimes CTRL-Y, sometimes nothing).

do we only want to go back??

reminded of this quote today in a advisory panel group meeting where only the diehard linux-open source everything person didn't have a working webcam.

Has anyone does any investigations on the so-called human "super recognizers" used by police? The first time I heard about it was in a German article discussing how German police are using that to identify Eritrean protestors they want to target.

PhilippBayer,
@PhilippBayer@genomic.social avatar

@timnitGebru German taz (left-leaning) has a few critical articles. Here's one on how German police doesn't care to measure the success of these programs

https://taz.de/Hype-um-Super-Recognizer/!5948941/

They link to these two English-language papers https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33662395/

there's a fine line between
'like Feynman, I ask simple questions because i want people to challenge their assumptions'
and
'i am an idiot who hasn't done their homework before this meeting'

tread carefully

bitten again by read_table(); loading in some uniq -c output that contains different numbers of space per row. read_table() throws away the columns with extra white spaces.

Solution seems to be to use data.table::fread()?

Anybody else recently running into @biorxivpreprint API errors? I'm getting error:500 when the range of requested dates is too large. I.e., https://api.biorxiv.org/details/biorxiv/2018-01-01/2024-01-01

Came home from an overnight trip as a birthday present and found the house burgled :(
They didn't take laptops, didn't take Switchs, looked only for cash. I'm poor!!! I have no cash! We have the worst house in the neighbourhood!!! What the hell burglars

For the academics out there, so you have a #slack account in your lab, and is it useful?

I've had one for years and it's been quite handy for code sharing and just general lab communication. But it might be hard for me to maintain due to policies at my University.

PhilippBayer,
@PhilippBayer@genomic.social avatar

@foaylward funny enough, my old lab uses Discord. one channel per project.
no 90 days limit for messages!

PhilippBayer,
@PhilippBayer@genomic.social avatar

@elduvelle @foaylward see that's my problem with slack, these things should be stored somewhere else, but more often than not it's an additional extra step that's left out. you can't enforce it forever. and then, 3 months later, Slack deletes the code snippet you relied on and you have to rewrite it
