I'm finally releasing the first version of my MS-DOS OPL1/2/3 VGM player! It's open-source under the MIT License.

A lot of learning has led up to this moment and while it's not perfect yet, I'm happy with what I've accomplished.

Me and @scj have been debugging an issue with AIRConfig for , and at the current stage it looks like the actual problem is not AIRConfig, but MacTCP/System 7.1

The problem manifests itself with a long run of “The host name [] is unknown” errors in the Router Log window when starting up the router

It appears this happens when trying to resolve too many domains with CNAMEs in a row. (1/3)

I haven't seen this error despite using DNS names wherever possible. (My personal one is an A record)
One thing I do get though is a lot of this line spammed in my log. It's always the same. No clue what it means but it seems to be cosmetic cause everything works. I didn't start getting it till a few days ago I think.

The OPL Archive - Release 8 is now available!
209 new songs, including the original AdLib song disks! 354 updated files fixing lots of issues!
Get it while it's hot at https://opl.wafflenet.com! But then again, the OPL series sound chips are ALWAYS hot!

Sad news if you are an OS/2 fan - it looks like the Hobbes archive is finally sunsetting. https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/
OS/2 isn't my thing, but this site has been an indispensable resource when I've tried it. Hopefully it will be archived somewhere.

My OPL music player is making progress! Now it supports VGM files. It can play OPL1, OPL2 and OPL3 songs, and supports VGM GD3 tags and loops!
Performance is not great yet (needs roughly a 486DX-33) but there are lots of opportunities for improvement!

My custom OPL music player, currently called VGMSlap, playing my OPL3 cover of "Riddle" from Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. The contents of the OPL registers are shown on screen.

This 286 motherboard, left for dead in the VCFMW free pile, lives to see another day! The battery explosion cut a deep hole in the board, but after reconnecting voltages on ISA and the A5 line on the SIPP slots (and converting them to SIMM), it's up and running. A true survivor!

Rebuilt 286 system in case, running Landmark System Speed Test. The 286-12 is reporting that it performs like an 18mhz AT.
286 motherboard as found in the VCFMW free pile. A battery explosion has cut a deep hole in the board, exposing the ground plane. There are scorch marks. A wire bridges a severed trace reconnecting one of the 5V lines to the ISA slots, but there is still additional damage.
The 286 board with the bottom ISA slot removed to better show the damage to the board. Several holes are burned and traces missing.

@philpem I am glad too! I am not usually a very good "repair guy" (mostly just do basic recaps) but I figured since the board was free I would take some risks. It paid off and I learned a bit in the process.

Many years ago, I was sold an Amiga with a non-working "tank mouse". Today, I decided to finally see if I could get to the bottom of why it doesn't work.
...turns out it's actually a Commodore 1350. For the C64. facepalm

All set up at #vcfmw !!

More random Sun hardware for #September’s #Suntember for #SunMicroSystems. This time it’s a Sun Ultra Enterprise 450.

Maybe not as fancy as the Sun Microsystems Sun Blade 2500 I posted before but it’s a box. Who can resist a box?!

It even has wheels! You can sit on it and have your work buddy push you around like you’re driving a car 😛

@SinclairSpeccy You know it means business when it's got 3 power supplies!

MrKsoft,
@MrKsoft@bitbang.social avatar

@SinclairSpeccy I think they're just for redundancy, unless you're loading it up, but I can just imagine this thing blowing a breaker if you plug literally anything else in alongside it...

In an effort to clear out stuff I've had my fun with and make room for new adventures, I have a humble list of things I am selling at #vcfmw this year.
I also have a considerably less humble "want list". Check out both below and stop by if something catches your interest!

And with some hacks, ClassiCube for IRIX now runs on...
-- SiliconGraphics Indigo2 Solid IMPACT, MIPS R10k --
..at whopping 1 FPS, but it works! 😜

MrKsoft,
@MrKsoft@bitbang.social avatar

@flexion

@jamesholden I have a High Impact I could try on, but it's an R4400/250 so that may cause some additional performance complications.

MrKsoft,

@flexion

@jamesholden

Loads up the menu okay but trying to start a game spits out an error in the console: execing ClassiCube failed: 2
Guessing a MIPS3 vs MIPS4 problem?

My bad, I have been notified I needed to specify a user name at the command line. But I forgot - I don't have TRAM! (Textures aside it runs at a playable enough frame rate - 10-12 fps I would guess)

MrKsoft,
@MrKsoft@bitbang.social avatar

@flexion @jamesholden Update to the update, Discord confirmed that as a High Impact I definitely have TRAM (was getting my hardware mixed up), it's more just that ClassiCube isn't happy with what Impact gives it.

The is my project to preserve the history of DOS-based chiptune music in a central location, using the universal VGM file format. I'm trying to find and add as many songs as I can. Check it out at https://opl.wafflenet.com - You can even listen in your browser!
