I love this book. It's the first time I've read anything by Ottesa Oshfegh. I'm 20 pages short of completion. It was a quick read though I did not like the first chapter and debated going on. Luckily, it got more descriptive, and the narrative voice became unique and interesting. The subject matter is on the darker or grittier side, but the narrative voice is relatable somehow. I don't know if I want to see the movie. I'd want it to live up to the book. 🖤

I fell asleep hard this afternoon on covid day 5, so hard I thought it was 6:00 a.m. the next day when I woke and not 6:00 p.m. of the same day. I realized I had an hour to fix and eat dinner before tomorrow's fasting blood work though I'm not particularly hungry. Sometimes I worry the minute I decide not to eat the night before, the fasting hours will be a little too long. Still, if being low grade sick could lead to weight loss, I'd take it as I was over it before it became dangerous.

This is a bad movie. Very, very bad.

@philheppenstall I think if you took a drink for every bad detective chasing serial killer trope, it would be fun, and all would be wasted drunk. I kind of liked Nope. Quite unique.

“Members of far-right convoy groups are holding private meetings where they are developing an ambitious and unorthodox plan to occupy police stations in cities across Canada in order to pressure police into arresting government officials.”

It's so weird when people brag that they never cry. I get it buddy, I've been a repressive coper too, but I'm not proud of it.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@RickiTarr I can't cry anymore. 😆 I think I'm afraid I'll never get it together again, which is kinda nutty, I guess. But I do like watching films and shows that allow me to emote a bit. 💜

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@RickiTarr I would like to add that sometimes the human voice singing makes me cry. So there are moments the old softie comes out from before the time life became hard and I did too in a way. She's still there. Kids singing in a choir, for example, and yeah, at least one tear or misting eyes, or even a nice trickle.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@RickiTarr The last time I cried over a movie was when I watched Horse Girl. It may not make anyone else cry, but I can safely say it is moving. I wrote a post about it. https://brokenwriterblog.wordpress.com/2021/08/31/horse-girl/

If you grew up in an evangelical household, what are some weird stories you heard that you later realized was just propaganda/fear tactics?

  1. The dangers of playing D&D: Some kid was playing D&D with his friends and afterwards went home and unalived his little sis because the D&D demons told him to.
  2. Tom Petty was going to hell because he wrote that song "Won't Back Down".
  3. ACDC was going to hell because ACDC meant "you go both ways".
  4. Catholics were going to hell because they had stained glass windows and worshipped Mary.
MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@KentuckyConjurer @tinyfrights This is more a Presbyterian/Reformed tradition: God has predestined you for heaven or hell in the afterlife.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@KentuckyConjurer @tinyfrights By the fruits of the spirit ye shall know them. 😂 But also other sneaky things can get thrown in: If your life is looking good on the surface, you must be one of the "frozen chosen." (Frozen because the theology hardly encourages free will.)

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@KentuckyConjurer @tinyfrights I taught vacation bible school one summer to 4th graders in a very conservative Presbyterian church and the material we were to use was a booklet with multiple choice answers in the form of pictures. I don't remember the question exactly, but one of the "answers" was hell represented by flames, and yes, that was the right answer. Ah yes, comfort for the wee ones. Not long after---divorce and pretty much not going to church, at least not a Presbyterian church.

I missed #MusicWomenWednesday but while I'm listening to jazz today, I would be remiss not to mention Diana Krall. "Diana Krall...is a Canadian jazz pianist and singer known for her contralto vocals. She has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, including over six million in the US. On December 11, 2009, Billboard magazine named her the second greatest jazz artist of the decade (2000–2009), establishing her as one of the best-selling artists of her time." Wikipedia

@MargaretSefton @ElizabethLeeCo @KentuckyConjurer The second season of the Curious Case of Natalia Grace is on Max, all from Natalia’s view point 👀👀👀👀👀

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@Goretta_Synn @KentuckyConjurer @jacklaridian @ElizabethLeeCo I'm a daughter to a conservative minister who is very picky about language, so this did not surprise me at all. Ministers also tend to be a little grandstanding. It goes with the territory. This man compared to her previous parents seems the best of her options thus far. And after all, their other children appear to be happy and relaxed, and not pretending to be happy. The mom seems good. idk. I think the show wants to drum up drama.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@Goretta_Synn @KentuckyConjurer @jacklaridian @ElizabethLeeCo Yeah it's impossible to know how much the subjects are driving this and how much the producers and director is. That's what drives me crazy about these things. It often feels like a manipulated reality, and it often is.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@jacklaridian @Goretta_Synn @KentuckyConjurer @ElizabethLeeCo Seriously. The young lady could have just hogged the pizza or something. lols.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@jacklaridian @KentuckyConjurer @Goretta_Synn @ElizabethLeeCo These are good questions. But maybe her age has something to do with it and wanting independence. And yeah, living in a strict environment as an adult in which even words are carefully monitored may be untenable, especially as one matures. Maybe go fund me is a way to establish some independence. And who knows why Antwon calls her "selfish." I know from experience labels employed by parents in the ministry, yeah. lols.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@kamikat @Goretta_Synn @ElizabethLeeCo @KentuckyConjurer Explain a bit more: weird adoption circumstances. And I feel the same: It's hard to watch this and not have mixed feelings! 💜
