If you are a homeowner and are insured by State Farm, Ohio Mutual, Pure Insurance, Westfield, and maybe Nationwide, you can get a FREE device to monitor your electrical system for arcing (one of the causes of house fires). h/t @w8emv

@andytiedye @ai6yr @w8emv My State Farm agent had barely heard of #Ting and was amazed to hear I have one. The app is fun, you can see long term Voltage graphs and "real time" emission levels. And every Monday you get an eMail summary with V graphs for each day of the previous week.

I have been using Thinkpads for years and been using Trackpoints. I love the technology, but we getting a bit of strain in my fingers, so wanted to try something else, so using a laptop with a touchpad instead. Finding that I kept clicking things by mistake. Thought there was something wrong with my laptop, but then found there was a setting for clicking things my mistake and it was called "Tap to click" and a similar one for right clicking. Both were on by default.

I guess I am one of those that prefers to click when I want to click and not have a slight touch of the touchpad register as a click. The touchpad has to differentiate between clicking, scrolling, moving, etc., so having everything with the same level of pressure seems likely to lead to mistakes.

What about you? Do you enable tap to click?

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@jon Have you ever noticed variation in the tap strength required to click an iPhone? Sometimes a gentle (or accidental) brush with the side of your finger works, sometimes a firm straight down strike with the tip of your finger is required. Happens in Safari for a few predictable requests. Happens seemingly randomly in iOS Vivaldi. Maybe only on my tiny SE2020? I don't see anyone else complaining...

Looking for current antivirus recommendations in the US please. I haven’t kept up and sites I use to rely on for info have deteriorated. Wish I had time to learn Linux. I use Malwarebytes; is the Windows Defender really enough? Want to get away from bloatware like Norton (crypto miner) & avoid spyware (Kaspersky, Avast). TYSM for any input

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@deewani Wow - no replies yet! So much established superstition about the need for AV software. In 20+ years of Windows, I saw no problems blocked by the greedy antivirus tools. But over a dozen false alarm reports that broke apps and wasted lots of debugging time. If you think just a bit before clicking on some unknown and possibly shady link (especially in a spam eMail), you can stay safe without AV software. And yes, there are fewer attacks on Linux, another reason for switching.

I wish I could have some telemetry other than App Store Connect for @IceCubesApp . I wonder what I could use that would not completely fuck up the privacy of the app? It's hard to make product decision without any data.

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@dimillian @garyjesionowski @box464 @FabianLaasch @IceCubesApp Nobody has mentioned phone size. Mine is the tiny SE2020 and everything is hard to hit. (Essential tremor doesn't help...) The Fav button is better recently, but still seems smaller than months ago.

💡 Thunderbird Tip:
By right-clicking the Get New Messages button (a cloud icon with a downward-facing arrow), you can choose which account to receive new messages for.

@thunderbird

Is the left click default to get all messages from all servers? Can we change the default? Right click and get all seems to show me more activity in the status line at the bottom of the window than just left click... But often nothing shows there?

@dimillian @IceCubesApp Why do I get this screen there - and for lots of random other images?

dimillian, to random
@dimillian@mastodon.social avatar

I’m trying to see which front facing feature would be nice for @IceCubesApp to have with iOS 17. But appart from iOS 17 I don’t see any.

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@dimillian @IceCubesApp Please, for those of us who read from oldest to newest, an option or automatic sense to have newly loading quotes and images push unread posts upward - instead of having them scroll down in front of what we're currently reading! Surely I'm not the only chron?

And still, on my tiny SE2020 screen, if a paragraph I'm writing is too long to fit in the window, it scrolls at the end of each line to show the top instead of the words I'm typing!

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@dimillian @IceCubesApp I know that if I'm at the very newest post, newly arriving ones display.

My issue is in the middle of scrolling, when a post I haven't seen yet, above what I'm reading, includes a big image or quoted post that is apparently discovered after it has been assigned a display height. I see the quote or image push the bottom of the loading post down in front of what I was reading.

If I was scrolling new-to-old, that would work.

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@dimillian @IceCubesApp

Could this be due to slow internet? When do you discover a post includes a tall image or quoted post? Only when it is about to become visible?

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@dimillian @IceCubesApp

Could it be due to federation issues? Not all tall inclusions trigger the obvious resize and downward scroll...

Maybe if my instance doesn't already know about the image or quote post, you size the display height without it, and revise it when it is just about to scroll into view?

I've added a new entry in the account context menu to quickly access privacy settings in the Mastodon web UI. From there you can easily turn on / off your post being indexed and other relevant settings.

@dimillian I don't see it in 1.7.5 - does that mean my server isn't updated? Or my phone isn't?

Would have never expected to snap a photo of a hummingbird with a cell phone. As it happened:

Anna’s hummingbird, Calypte anna, resting on a lemon tree http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/175060011 At some point it took a sip—or looked like it did—from its flowers.

@albertcardona While I was looking at your photo (in the #IceCubes app on my iPhone), I happened to drag my finger against the bird image, and pulled just the bird away from its original location! Totally repeatable there, a faint white outline expands out from the touch to the bird outline before it moves. How can that be possible? Can't make it happen anywhere else...

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@albertcardona Thank You! I see it now... You have to tap a clearly delineated and fairly large object in a photo. Sometimes the halo expands to select the whole image, sometimes it doesn't appear at all. If there is any text nearby, you trigger recognition instead. Works in the Photos app, and in #IceCubes but have never seen it work in Safari. Amazed I never triggered it in years past...

I had not heard of the web technologies for making use of P3 color in CSS before I joined Apple. Over the last three months, I dived deep, getting to know so much about it all. Wow. There is so much possibility for color on the web. And web designers have not been taking advantage, even though it shipped in Safari 10! Over SIX YEARS AGO!!! 😱🤩🌈

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@jensimmons Just searched - "The 2020 iPhone SE has a TrueTone screen with 1400:1 contrast ratio, support for the P3 wide color gamut..." Does that mean mine can show all of #P3, or just that it understands the code for it? Is there some handy app or site that demonstrates how much of the #gamut can be displayed? Or whether an app or site is using P3?

@box464 Your "Ice Refills" #Shortcut for #iOS seems to have stopped working on my iPhone. Possibly after the update to #ios1641 though I'm pretty sure I've seen it work since then.

So I made a home screen shortcut to the @dimillian GitHub, and it fails the same way - tap it and the color changes for a moment but nothing else happens.

But both of them work properly from inside the iPhone #Shortcuts app, and both work even on the home screen on my iPad (also 16.4.1).

Do you see this issue?

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@box464 The "suspend all apps" trick actually worked! All my iPhone shortcuts can now be used from the home screen.

Never seen a shortcut fail before...
