Album of the Day 271: Céleste by L'indécis

https://cultclassicrecords.bandcamp.com/album/c-leste

2015 instrumental hip hop EP from Grenoble, France. Jazzy chill hip hop.

Fun fact: while Céleste isn't inspired by the video game Celeste—the video game wouldn't start development for another four months!—L'indécis has participated in speedrunning Celeste!

https://old.reddit.com/r/chillhop/comments/9cfi1r/hello_im_lind%C3%A9cis_music_producer_at_chillhop/e5ac4j4/

My picks: "Jeux d'eau," "Lost," "Céleste"

While Letterboxd seems to be the popular option for logging and reviewing movies, there doesn't seem to be a consensus option for video games. In the past I've used Backloggery, Grouvee, and Playfire (RIP), but dropped those years ago.

So, what does everyone on the fediverse use for logging/reviewing video games?

Started playing Batman: Arkham Asylum recently. I last played the game in 2015, and I've never played any of the sequels, so I figured I'd go back and give the original a go before continuing the series.

So far, it's held up pretty well! I'm not too great at the combat, but it's fun enough. Love the sort of Metroidvania style of the game—although maybe it's closer to The Legend of Zelda, with the different buildings acting as dungeons.

I know Hard Drive is satire, but I'm not entirely convinced this specific article is satire. 😆

Album of the Day 256: It Doesn't Matter by Saxon Shore

https://saxonshore.bandcamp.com/album/it-doesnt-matter

2009 post-rock album from Los Angeles, California. "This Place" pushes into a shoegaze/dream pop direction with guest vocals from Caroline Lufkin.

My picks: "Nothing Changes," "This Place," "Bar Clearing Good Times"

Album of the Day 250: Hellfire by black midi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfAOFyhfZJU&list=OLAK5uy_kUzro9EulGZUsIl-Bvn8hnQmPZU0jpSHw&index=1

https://bmblackmidi.bandcamp.com/album/hellfire

2022 experimental rock album from London, England. A crazy experience that takes from prog rock, show tunes, jazz fusion, and more. A hellish nightmare concept album, at times sung, at other times ranted in a blend of carnival barker and auctioneer; often hectic, occasionally soft, frequently discordant.

My picks: "Eat Men Eat," "Welcome to Hell," "Dangerous Liasons"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqPC-BkylxA&list=OLAK5uy_nzNqlLAs3PLitt_FR1-_pO-1Vswhe8ff8&index=1

1959 cool jazz album. Notably uses a variety of time signatures, rather than sticking with the tried-and-true 4/4. (Not that there isn't 4/4 on the album.)

My picks: "Blue Rondo à la Turk," "Take Five," "Pick up Sticks"

So last year I watched Batman: The Animated Series, Batman '89 and Batman Returns. A friend lent me a copy of Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. I thought all of those were great.

I recently watched the Harley Quinn animated series. The same friend lent me a copy of Superman For All Seasons, Dark Night: A True Batman Story, and Batman: Hush. Then I bought these through a combo of my local hobby shop and Target's buy 2 get 1 free sale.

I might have a problem. 😆

Album of the Day 246: First Band On The Moon by The Cardigans

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEf9DvfKpp0&list=PLI6kLIhBBwmTus5482Q5VTu6AwnpSPBcX&index=1

1996 indie pop/rock album from Jönköping, Sweden. A fairly strong lounge influence and lyrics that darkly contrast the upbeat music make this a pretty interesting album. "Lovefool" is the big hit, and "Step On Me" is also plenty popular, but the album's got plenty of other good ones, including a great Black Sabbath cover.

My picks: "Your New Cuckoo," "Heartbreaker," "Iron Man"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54W8kktFE_o&list=PLHTo__bpnlYVFUoh6h0FgewYE6_7VSCki&index=1

1975 prog rock album. Pink Floyd's best album. Sorry Dark Side of the Moon, you're a great one, too, but this is a perfect album.

I know I usually dig for the less obvious albums, but I felt lazy this time. 😆

Album of the Day 236: After the Gold Rush by Neil Young

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ppMcqsg0Sw&list=OLAK5uy_l61knFHCT9-JvA88E172MSuaGZupcQwSc&index=1

1970 folk rock/country rock album. The front half of this album has an incredible run of some of the best of Neil Young's work—not to say the back half is bad by any means. "Tell Me Why" might be my favorite Neil Young song overall.

My picks: "Tell Me Why," "Southern Man," "Don't Let It Bring You Down"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPCLFtxpadE&list=OLAK5uy_mr3aLJuPJvJve1bSwRl-8W4iN8uhGOr80&index=1

1971 prog rock album from London, England. Okay, everyone loves "Roundabout." But where's the love for the rest of the album? It's an incredible album the whole way through.

Except for "Cans and Brahms." Feel free to skip the "pesky contracts prevented a Rick Wakeman original" track. 😆

My picks: "South Side of the Sky," "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)," "Heart of the Sunrise"

Album of the Day 227: Don Caballero 2 by Don Caballero

https://doncaballero.bandcamp.com/album/don-caballero-2

1995 math rock/noise rock album from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Loud, angular, discordant. Aggressive up front, although the album calms down a bit towards the back end.

Pro-tip: if you ever want to annoy co-workers, try putting on "Repeat Defender," especially from about 4:28-5:48!

My picks: "Stupid Puma," "Repeat Defender," "Dick Suffers Is Furious With You"

Album of the Day 222: Half-Life 2: Episode Two OST by Kelly Bailey

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oHWu6GhAro&list=OLAK5uy_lhTt3rp9w1Smkf8RkzhDIH73nzgYE1apw&index=5

2007 dark ambient/industrial rock OST. While the ambient tracks are solid if occasionally forgettable, when Kelly Bailey rocks out it's some absolutely fantastic stuff. "Vortal Combat" is possibly my favorite song in the franchise.

My picks: "Vortal Combat," "Sector Sweep," "Eon Trap"

Album of the Day 221: Deltron 3030 by Deltron 3030

https://delthefunkyhomosapien.bandcamp.com/album/deltron-3030

2000 rap opera concept album. I'm generally not big on rap, but between catchy beats and some very unconventional (and nerdy) subject matters, this album is definitely an exception for me. The first song alone mentions Neuromancer, Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix. Wonderful stuff.

My picks: "3030," "Virus," "Time Keeps on Slipping"

Album of the Day 215: Heaven's Youth by STRFKR

https://starfucker.bandcamp.com/album/heavens-youth

2012 synthpop album consisting of demo versions of all of the songs off of Reptilians. While the final versions on Reptilians are more polished, there's something really neat about hearing these earlier, rougher recordings.

My picks: "Jackalope (Julius) (Van Mix)," "Astoria - Original Recording," "Quality Time - Skeletron Mix)"

Got back into Sentinels of the Multiverse Enhanced Edition recently thanks to a friend with a near complete collection. Got what Greater Than Games had on clearance, and picked up Sentinels of Earth-Prime, too.

Unfortunately, getting what I'm missing (Wrath of the Cosmos, Shattered Timelines, a bunch of mini expansions) would involve buying someone else's collection off the GeekMarket or eBay, including the base game and expansions that I already own. 🫠

1994 Midwest emo/alt rock album from Seattle, Washington. Perhaps a bit front-loaded in terms of hits, but there's never a drop in quality.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00PS7RCYb5c&list=OLAK5uy_m2OW12uphxckRjzBZgrYYJLvCvUBqnAO8&index=1

1967 psychedelic rock/progressive rock album consisting solely of covers of popular songs. Each has their own little twist that makes it distinctly their own.

"People Get Ready" is the only song that doesn't quite work for me.

My picks: "She's Not There," "STRA / You Keep Me Hanging On / WBER," "Take Me For A Little While / RYFI"
