Influential hacktivist group Cult of the Dead Cow will headline Def Con next week, releasing a framework and distributed network for apps that fully encrypt files, messages and even social networking. GIFT LINK: wapo.st/3Yl9nNK

JosephMenn,

You may recall cDc from such hits as Mudge Zatko's creation of fast-track DARPA cyber grants, the creation of Veracode, Back Orifice and the word hacktivism itself.

JosephMenn,

The leader of this effort is Chris Rioux, aka Dildog, former L0pht member, co-founder of Veracode, and lead author of Back Orifice 2000, released at Def Con in 1999. Please read and share, and I'll see you in Vegas.

A day after a bombshell preliminary injunction by a Louisiana federal judge decrying vast censorship, the State Dept. canceled meetings with Facebook to compare notes on foreign influence campaigns, sources told us at The Washington Post for this story, which is hereby gifted. https://wapo.st/3PNdi3p

If you work on election disinformation or foreign influence at one of the social media companies, I'd like to chat about the injunction. DM me at the bird place for my Signal. Thank you.

I don’t usually gift breaking news articles before the context and analysis are added. But holy moly, a preliminary injunction against Biden officials communicating with the social media companies. https://wapo.st/44snxyc

Y’all…

I had to go to FB to find out about fireworks tonight due to a passing rain storm. I haven’t been on FB in a long, long time.

There are people posting elementary school math problems and adults are arguing about the answers.

What is happening to this world? Did people forget how to do basic arithmetic?

JosephMenn,

@jerry they changed math.

JosephMenn,

@jerry well it’s a reference to one of the Incredibles movies. But kids are now taught to do multiplication and division with different methods, and they have to show their work. So adults trying to help with the way they we’re taught would get marked down.

Working on Sundays in July brings back memories as a lowly copy aide at WaPo (1996-ish), when I frequently worked the weekend shift sorting mail/faxes, etc. On Sundays during the summer, Bob Woodward was usually the de facto editor-in-chief of the newsroom, and each week he would send me or one of the other copy aides w/ a fistful of cash to take a cab to Ben & Jerry's and buy dozens of pints of ice cream for everyone in the newsroom.

He called it Bob Woodward's Ice Cream Sunday. To my mind, the cab part was always the fatal flaw, because the shitty DC cab's AC never worked and half the pints were usually a mess by the time they made it back.

Needless to say, when I was the one responsible for fetching the ice cream, the selection was over-represented with New York Super Fudge Chunk!

Taranto showed up at Obama's residence on Thursday after former President Donald Trump posted screenshots on his Truth Social platform that featured a purported address for Obama's home in Washington. Taranto's account reposted Trump's post.

"We got these losers surrounded!" Taranto wrote on Telegram yesterday. "See you in hell, Podesta's and Obama's!"

Big congratulations to my student, Alexander Master, on successfully defending his Ph.D. dissertation "Modeling and Characterization of Internet Censorship Technologies." After some minor edits, his dissertation should be available in a few weeks via the CERIAS library (https://www.cerias.purdue.edu/apps/reports_and_papers/index.php). Or contact me directly.

JosephMenn,

@spaf Congratulations to Doctor Master
