@WTL I think a wider top on top both doors can help a lot and should fall within heritage standards.

“Avid cyclist” alert. #ottbike #BikeTooter

Why does the press always use that? It is not like you ever read “Sean, an avid driver”

@plantarum every spring there are articles and letters to the editors of the several newspapers about some cycling issue. I almost believe it is done on purpose for click bait.

@meganL @fedibikes the report is from 2015 with data from around 2000-2012, it would interesting to see how things have evolved in the last 12 years. Definitely, Ottawa has build on its cycling network, several AT bridges, more separate bike tracks, protected intersections, traffic signals, counter flow lanes and even removed several downtown car lanes. I never thought of Ottawa as one of the most dangerous cities to bike, people even come here for multi day cycling trips.

Hansonthebike,
@Hansonthebike@mastodon.world avatar

@meganL @fedibikes I only quickly glanced over the numbers and I think I saw somewhere halfway that they calculated it per million km cycled or something. Anyway, I have found it really hard to come up with objective ways to rank cycling cities. People for Bikes does some great research on cycling infrastructure every year looking at tons of different data and tries to standardize somewhat. But they rely on OSM which is not always up to date.

Last Sunday, I hung out at the Hartwells Locks in . I counted over 100 people with a bike crossing the locks in 20 minutes. That is >300 an hour.

Lots of people with e-bikes now and several people struggling getting the bike on to the locks. This definitely needs improvement.

Lots of older folks, clearly touring for the morning or the day, so happy to see that. Our pathways allow for great routes with little interference from car traffic.

A person in a blue shirt cycling on a bike (that appears a bit too small). Another person is looking away with his arms crossed. An historic lockmaster's house is seen in the background.
Three people are crossing locks at a canal. the old winch system is visible. One person has a a basket on the front and a milk crate at the back. The other two cyclists are walking their bike too, in shirts and T shirts. Lots of green in the background.
Over a dozen people with bicycles are visible in a a setting of trees and locks at the Rideau canal. Several people are waiting to cross, while others just crossed and are regrouping.

For the forth time, volunteers across Canada fan out to count cyclists and pedestrians in the second week of June. Will you volunteer a few hours too? #ottbike

A road has to be closed for possibly a week bc a driver (not ‘a car’) does something stupid. Just imagine someone on an #ottbike would cause a road to be closed for a week and it would be the most read article on CTV for days with the traffic trolls out in full force.

The best #ottbike route through downtown Ottawa runs currently through Quebec 🤔

The cushions of my Bose headphones started to come apart. There are replacement ones, but they are not cheap: CAD 37 at Bose and CAD 25-ish on Amazon (before tax and shipping).

Last winter, I repaired parts of them, but now the other half came loose (basically the glue is giving up I think). So I took a needle and threat and sewed the split halves back together.

Two black headphone ear cushions are sitting side by side. They look like new again, after the seals that had come apart have been sewed together again by Hans on the Bike himself, saving over 30 Canadian dollars.

has not been eating since Sunday. He's still somewhat interested in water, but not much. Interestingly, when he hears me filling something up with water, he comes downstairs but doesn't drink. This week, he has an interest in sitting in the laundry sink (he's never done that). He was still able to jump on the wash machine next to it, but I provided him with a chair as a halfway station now. Then he was interested in the laundry basket for the evening.

A black and white cat is cozily sitting in a laundry basket. there are dish clothes, socks and a towel visible.

@johnefrancis The vet diagnosed feline leukemia and there is nothing we can do. We give him palliative care and are monitoring him very closely. He doesn't appear in pain and he still does enjoys the odd half hour outside so we make sure he is as comfortable as possible. He sleeps a lot (it is a cat after all 🙂 ) and is still observing the world around him. Once it gets bad we will have to put him down sadly. We'll make sure he won't enter the suffering stage.

We didn't expect this, but made it another week. He basically stopped eating, other than a teaspoon or two of wetfood. He does drink a bit throughout the day. We said our goodbyes at least three times this week, lots of hugs, assuming he won't make it through the night, but the next morning his big eyes are welcoming us downstairs again. There's 2 hours of some activity and drinking and then he retires for most of the day until early evening 1/2

Another week has passed and is still with us. The last two days he hasn’t been eating much and I am surprised he is still hanging in. Walking up the stairs has been harder and I have now put a chair next to the kitchen counter, he can’t jump from the floor on the counter anymore. I accidentally discovered he really enjoys a bit of milk deluded with water. Drinking from a bowl in the sink is a new thing. He even went into the catio last night.

Hansonthebike,

He was never allowed on the counter but we are turning a blind eye now.

This article by Toon Dreessen about a derelict building in DT has a number of good suggestions on how to get a developer moving on it: https://www.architectsdca.com/news/housing-potential-meets-political-will/ It is not rocket science but needs political will.

Well, we thought wouldn’t make it to the end of the week. Last night, I thought he would go (tears), but here we are and he is still sitting next to me. He only licks some of the fat from a tin of cat food contents. We hand feed him Temptations now and then and he still laps up quite a bit of water. We would have been walking in Lisbon today, but we postponed our trip for him last week so he better hangs in with us a bit longer.
