I'm seeing so much #antisemitism right now. Let me share with you my traditional response to it: my SFF #novels. The ones with #Jewish main characters are The Time of the Ghosts, The Wizardry of Jewish Women, and The Green Children Help Out. https://gillianpolack.com/my-books/ The Green Children Help Out is published by a Jewish press.
I would be very happy if people shared their favourite SFF novels by current Jewish writers. So many Jewish cultures to read about! So much potential for good fiction.

Worst downsizing I ever went through (short of "company is bankrupt, go home") was 10%, and that fucked our operational efficiency for a quarter. Spotify laid off 17% and are suffering. The C-suite were fools to assume there was 17% slack in the system, much less that middle management would choose the right 17% to fire (or that competent workers wouldn't see this coming and jump ship to better jobs, leaving time-servers behind).

GillianPolack,

@cstross The worst one I experienced was 16,000 to 3,000. All the hidden bigotries emerged when that happened, so some of us didn't survive very long after. It was a federal department and that's when (to no-one's surprise) Australia's education system and employment policies completely changed.

This is cool - the artificial island next to Docklands Library now has a nesting black swan in residence. I anticipate going "Awwww" at too-cute cygnets soon. Possibly followed by running from an aggrieved parent swan (shades of the PG Wodehouse short story, Jeeves and the Impending Doom!).

GillianPolack,

@timrichards @NarrelleMHarris I saw it when I was in Melbourne! I even took pictures! I feel so adventurous and travelled and up to date for someone who seldom leaves her flat.

GillianPolack,

@timrichards @NarrelleMHarris I didn't actually get into the library, even though it was just round the corner. My time looked long from a distance, short from when i got there! But... I proved I'm able to do (limited) things... and see swans.

GillianPolack,

@timrichards @NarrelleMHarris I spent a lot of time wondering if Uncle Jack's warehouse (last visited in 1970s) still existed and if it was even in that area.

GillianPolack,

@timrichards @NarrelleMHarris He was older than my father, and my father would have turned 100 this December

"A compilation so good i had to write to the publisher and tell them what an outstanding piece of work this is." ~ Goodreads reviewer, Mitchell.

This Fresh Hell is in the wild and finding its readers! If you'd like to see what the fuss is about, head to Galaxy Bookshop in Sydney on 30 September for its NSW launch, with several of the authors there to talk about his new anthology of fresh takes on horror tropes!

GillianPolack,

@NarrelleMHarris @bookstodon I'm sure it will go wonderfully! I shall dream dreams of Belanglo in your honour.

GillianPolack,

@NarrelleMHarris @bookstodon I like the ASA letter about it. It's on my timeline. (Thanks are not necessary. A civil society where these things don't happen - that's necessary.)

#Spellcheck
No. Just no. Two reversed letters in 'fiction' does not give you permission to suggest 'deficit' as a replacement word.

Unfortunately, most forms lack this option. Being able to pick "Dr" instead of choosing between Mr/Ms/Miss/Mrs is a very good reason to get a PhD though. 😁

GillianPolack,

@veronica My bank for years kept turning my 'Dr' to 'Mr'. I explained that I had not changed gender, so they manually made it 'Mrs'. I explained that I'm not married, and my correct title is 'Dr.' They found another way to get it wrong. Finally, I complained on social media. They had to rejig their whole system at a deep level, but one Australian bank no longer automatically converts 'Dr' to 'Mr.'

GillianPolack,

@veronica It was before I learned that I could lose my temper, so it could've been worse. The closest I got to anger was polite sarcasm, which basically consisted of me telling them I was making it easy by insisting on just 'Dr'... because I have two PhDs...
I kept up the complaint because it was embedded in their system ie anyone not male suffered from it.
