The recording of the 2024 Sue and Harry Bovay Lecture in the History & Ethics of Engineering is now live!

Jon Leydens (Colorado School of Mines) spoke about social context & public welfare in engineering curricula and how we can better include these topics in engineering education.

Now that it's been accepted to ACM FAccT'24, I've updated the preprint of my paper on why artists are right that AI art is a kind of theft. I hope this promotes more serious thought about the visions of generative AI developers and the impacts of these technologies.

@janeadams The paper is really only about DALL•E et al., because: (1) they're the topical cases; (2) their style of AI is the one that presents the ethical problems professional artists are worried about; and (3) they are illustrative of a broader ethical problem in computing. Smaller models might be immune to the arguments I advance here, though I don't think this got mentioned in the current draft—I'll find a spot to add a note about them in the camera-ready version. Thanks for bringing it up.

This week I facilitated a session in a mechanical engineering course on values-sensitive stakeholder analysis. We talked about social and political challenges around renewable energy siting and how considering stakeholder values in design can improve outcomes for all.

This week I taught an ethics session in a class on engineered living materials. Before class we read about a brick made of plant fiber, fungus, and programmable bacteria, which could make temporary structures in disaster areas. In class we played a game about decision-making in that context, and discussed their ethical reasoning.

First round of ethics lessons with the first-year engineers this week! Grateful to the Democratic Knowledge Project at Harvard for creating these engaging values cards—I'm using them to prompt discussion of how values apply to generative artificial intelligence.
