I haven’t had hostess cupcakes in thirty years.

DunwichType,

@Luke I had some a few years ago. They’re pretty good. Not like Twinkies, I can’t eat those with adult taste buds.

I’m holding these two things here and I can’t believe the advancements we’ve made in thirty years.

2000000 MB / 1.44 MB

So you’ll need 1,388,890 floppies to back up this 2TB SSD.

(Use double-sided,high-density floppies and compression would help)

DunwichType,
@DunwichType@typo.social avatar

@Luke I have a 4TB USB-C SSD half that size. It blows my mind. I remember the first time I saw 1TB of storage. It was a RAID array bigger than the Sun E10K it was connected to.

The Internal Revenue Service needs to shutter out private lobbying money and get the website that handles every US citizen’s taxes properly working.

It’s 2024.

DunwichType,
@DunwichType@typo.social avatar

@Brilliantcrank @splorp @Luke US citizens living abroad still have to pay income tax. Which leads to lots of expats giving up their US citizenship.

Don’t you hate it when you find a cool book to buy and you want it but then you check your catalog and find out that you bought a copy two years ago with the jacket in excellent condition?

I know this is an extremely niche post and only a few people will know or even care, but HOW can the world’s best watch company, Patek Philippe, make amazing watches with incredible technical prowess and then just phone it in on the typography on the dial?!

Truly the most 🤢 watch dial in my opinion and an affront to their entire catalogue of beautiful watches.

Patek Philippe World Time 5231G Enamel Dial 18K White Gold watch with very boring and possibly artificially condensed all-caps serif type.
Patek Philippe World Time 5231J Enamel Dial 18K Yellow Gold watch with ugly typography around the dial.
A green Patek Philippe World Time 5930P Chronograph Platinum Green Dial watch with cheap-looking, san-serif typography.

@onpaperwings they aren’t the only ones. Last year I spotted “V ACHERON CONST ANTIN” on a mechanism.

The Age of Veer

DunwichType,
@DunwichType@typo.social avatar

@Luke I wish I could have kept my Veer stuff. It was so inspiring when I wanted to make type. Sadly, it didn’t survive a move to a smaller apartment.

Very excited to finally add this book to my library.

I first saw it at a type design workshop in Basel, Switzerland in 2009 and have been patiently (or not so patiently)looking for a copy ever since.

Found it (along with many books I could not afford 😭) at a speciality bookshop in London.

DunwichType,
@DunwichType@typo.social avatar

@onpaperwings that book is in dire need of a reprint. Someone should just do it POD like Liber Apertus did with “American Wood Type.”

Is it just my bad luck or is Bluetooth the absolute worst consumer technology that we have just come to accept?

DunwichType,
@DunwichType@typo.social avatar

@onpaperwings I find that Bluetooth is fine when not used with Apple products.

DunwichType, to random
@DunwichType@typo.social avatar

Where are the type designers advertising now that most of us have abandoned Twitter? I’ve heard that LinkedIn is good because people use it on their desktop so they might buy fonts right after seeing an ad. Instagram, OTOH, seems to be mobile centric so it’s not a great way to sell downloads.

@Luke@typo.social avatar

Apple, make a freakin’ mechanical keyboard with your layout already. $$$ #mechkey #mechanicalkeyboard #apple #keyboard #layout #mk

DunwichType,
@DunwichType@typo.social avatar

@Luke Apple won’t do a mechanical keyboard because they’re obsessed with making things thin. They also like using soft plastic and shitty paint so the keys will wear out, which isn’t something mechanical keyboard users want.

Went to image the hard drive I pulled out of the dead iMac G4 and it wouldn’t mount using my SATA/ATA to USB adapter. Turns out it was formatted as FAT with a Master Boot Record partition.

What the actual heck?

DunwichType,
@DunwichType@typo.social avatar

@Luke @splorp not on a G4 CPU.

DunwichType,
@DunwichType@typo.social avatar

@Luke @splorp my guess is Linux shenanigans.

I just read a lengthy review on Letterboxd — smart, interesting, insightful — but the author wrote everything in lowercase. By now I have acclimated to quick takes on social media in this style, so I am trying to avoid the “old man screaming at clouds” effect here, but... I’m a little sad to see this review in this form. The author took a lot of time to share some very valuable insights, but has voluntarily undermined it.

DunwichType,
@DunwichType@typo.social avatar

@slye someone just read their first book about the Bauhaus.

    This is what the web has become. 🤦‍♂️

    DunwichType,
    @DunwichType@typo.social avatar

    @onpaperwings I opened a page today and the entire screen was a poorly designed and pixelated ad with a tiny and hard to find arrow button that closed the ad. Underneath were three more ads and no content.

    Nobody is clicking this shit intentionally. People can’t be making money off this garbage. At what point will ad supported mobile content be unsustainable?

    WHEW - after three days of work (prob 15 hours), I have finally dug through all of the “Inland Printers” from 1886 to 1900 and have a 219 page PDF of any time the words “Linotype” or “Mergenthaler” was mentioned.

    @JTDType what’s the deal with people selling used Rolexes for more than they cost new? I’m not talking about vintage stuff; I’m seeing 2020-2023 Explorers that cost $7,700 new for over $12,000.

    Music nerds: Are there any articles or studies out there about music and nostalgia?

    There are seminal albums from my high school and college years that still hold up in my mind but am I just fooling myself and they aren’t that good?
