Hey, @paulrickards I'm thinking about getting a Panasonic RK-P400C. Good idea? Bad idea? Anything I should be worried about?

Cloudscout, to IBM

I only got one of the two . This one was manufactured in 1969.

My first #ModemMonday are a pair of 1200 baud modems for the #C64. A Commodore 1670 and an #Aprotek Minimodem-C. I used both of these on my SX-64 and it felt incredibly fast compared to 300 baud!

H/t to @dialupworld for starting the tag!

#RetroComputing #VintageComputing #modem

Cloudscout,

@paulrickards @dialupworld I had that Aprotek in the day. I called it the Tupperware modem. It was a nice upgrade from the 300 baud Volks 6420 that I started with. My final c64 modem was an Avatex 2400.

For nearly 5 years, I've been trying to figure out what this adapter is supposed to connect to. It's still a mystery. Someday, the right person is going to see this post and they'll finally solve this puzzle.

/

A connector block at the end of a cable. There are 3 connectors on the block, two DIN connectors and a 9 pin serial connector.
Labels on the connector block that read, "PC SERIAL" "MOUSE" and "MAC SERIAL".

Cloudscout,

@paulrickards I haven't found any KVM devices that had a configuration like this. It would have been from the first Mac transition era (68k-PPC). I also considered some kind of presentation system.

Cloudscout,

@paulrickards I wonder if it might be for some kind of digitizer tablet like an old Summasketch or similar...

Browser extension that replaces “AI” with “BS”

Cloudscout,

@thomasfuchs I prefer to just assume the letter I is actually a lowercase L. All the stories about how some guy named Al is getting all this free training from everyone else's work.

Cloudscout,

@governa I literally JUST finished eating a bunch of baby carrots like two minutes ago. No wonder I feel energized!

A friend got an electronic deadbolt that speaks to confirm that it has successfully locked/unlocked. I was really disappointed to learn that the unlock announcement can't be customized to say, "Program complete, enter when ready."

What was your first / / / etc?

When I started calling systems around age 11, I used the handle "POTPURI". A shortened form of "potpourri." The reason for the shortened spelling is that I first used it when playing Summer Games on the with our family. I wanted to come up with a funny name and thought of the line from the song "I Lost on Jeopardy" that said, "I took potpourri for one hundred and then my head started to spin..." but the whole word wouldn't fit into the character limit. This was incredibly funny to 10/11 year old Matt.

Made my day! A mate from the museum showed me his today live and in color. The machine is in really superb condition. All systems up and passes tests, no yellowing and no really big scratches. Made me a little jealous, but i'm actually not such a big commodore fan boy either.

Type label of SX-64 with serial
Sonic the hedgehog on a 5" color monitor :)

Cloudscout,

@thomasfuchs @Rp12Biker @mos_8502 This was absolutely my dream computer back around 1985. I used to pack up my whole C64 system to go between my mom's house and my dad's house frequently and the idea of a fully portable unit was soooo drool-inducing. I'd see it on the counter at a local store and it was just so cool. I have two of them now. Hehe.

Another #VintageComputing / #RetroComputing mystery package.

This is a device I already own but have never been able to get working. Hopefully this one survived shipping.

Cloudscout,

So many packing peanuts. Ugh.

Cloudscout,

Two grocery bags full of packing peanuts removed so far. Still going...

Cloudscout,

Packing peanuts removed. Now we're ready to extricate the machine from the bubble wrap.

Cloudscout,

And there it is. The #GTE #XT300E #ActionStation

It did get a bit damaged in shipping but it looks like it's just part of the case that could be popped back into place.

#VintageComputing / #RetroComputing

Cloudscout,

@thomasfuchs Yeah, but given this device's primary function is telephony, it made sense to match phone keypad layout.

Cloudscout,

Hmm. I didn't realize that this is different from my non-functional unit. This is the XT300E but my other one is the #XT300 (no 'E'). Slight differences in keyboard.

Cloudscout,

Three years ago, when I was trying to get the other one working, I found this "cave art" scrawled inside the case...

Cloudscout,

Quick smoke test of the #GTE #XT300E #ActionStation is a success!

More tinkering later when I have time to connect it to a phone line.

Found this #BarenakedLadies flash drive that I bought at a #BNL concert 17 years ago.

Cloudscout,

@cazabon I know, it's practically bottomless!
