I post about books. I post photos I snap while wandering about. I post in English, dansk and Danglish.

I mostly hang around these spaces:
#Books #Audiobooks #ShortStories
#Libraries #Bibliotek #Fredagsbog
#SilentSunday #ClimateDiary #Aarhus

Banner: Aarhus skyline and bay.

Profile pic: Me, white, dark shortish hair, tallish, emerging from a tunnel, smiling, happy, wearing a bright red leopard-print dress because that’s the sort of thing a woman in her 50s can happily wear because who cares.

I just renewed my library book in a few seconds from my phone while in another country after the library reminded me that it's due back soon. My inner toddler, who borrowed her first books after being lifted up the steps into the mobile library bus, will never not feel that digital library services are actual magic.

@purplepadma Absolutely exciting! The mobile library is still the one that gives me the most delight, even after all these years. The sheer excitement of knowing it was coming later today and the intimacy of stepping into a bus that magically was a library inside.

Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think unfettered AI is a pretty neat idea. The same life form also thought digital watches with calculators on them were a pretty neat idea.

CiaraNi,
@CiaraNi@mastodon.green avatar

I had to explain 'digital watches that were also a calculator' to a Young Person and got the same confused reaction that I got when I explained that we used to pay money to ring a telephone number to find out what time it was.

In neither case could I remember why we thought this was necessary in everyday life. I cannot think why we thought it was a good idea to be able to do maths on our wrists at any moment.

Will she read her book or will she mess about on her phone for the whole train trip? Tune in next toot!

I thought I didn't like thrillers, so there's yet another thing I was wrong about. This was gripping and fun and kept me on the edge of my earphones. So many striking set-pieces and settings. So well written by Louise Doughty and so well read by Clare Corbett that I feel as if I saw the story at the cinema.

Once again, I've been reminded of this fine description of the act and art of reading.

'A film is like a train, it has momentum. Hundreds of unseen people – lighting technicians, constructors of sets, make-up artists – give it the impact of reality. A novel is different. A novel is a bicycle, and readers must pedal.'

Børsen, the 17th century landmark former Stock Exchange in Copenhagen, is in flames. Nobody injured, thankfully. But a cultural tragedy.

Because there are no casualties, I hope it won’t seem flippant if I note that I got the breaking news that Børsen is burning through Mastodon when @nichobi posted a live photo. I remarked on it to a few colleagues. They hadn’t heard about it yet. So here we are. Getting our live news through the Fediverse, the way Odin intended.

This book is as captivating as the cover suggests. Sharp. Engrossing. Lots of clear-eyed observations about contemporary life, about capitalism, about the experience of being both an immigrant and an emigrant.

A city where train stops aren't located where people need to get on and off and where the station names keep changing because they are repeatedly sold to companies.

'A true neoliberal dream without any cultural baggage'

Apparently there’s a conspiracy theory that 15-minute cities are urban prisons where residents must wear QR codes that track their restricted movements. As opposed to the reality: mixed-use neighbourhoods so handy that signposts can use walking minutes as the unit of distance to the library, theatres, cafés, community services, museums, parks and shops.

#Aarhus
#LiveableCities
#WeApologiseForTheConvenience

Fingerpost signs in a mid-city mixed-use area with old and new buildings and with busy pedestrian routes to offices, shops, service companies, museums, recreational facilities, residential areas, the historic café district etc. Distance to facilities like the open-air museum and the university and the buzzing shopping & café district The Latin Quarter is given in minutes.

CiaraNi,
@CiaraNi@mastodon.green avatar

Another sign that a 15-minute city is a lively mixed-use place: a hardware store opened on a main city square in the shadow of the cathedral.

It's the kind of flagship space where you’d usually find a designer bag store. It rents drills, sack trolleys and tools by the hour. That can only make commercial sense when a city centre is not just for businesses and the rich, but for ordinary people living just around the corner in ordinary homes.

Next up in #books is this translated novel. Strangers is genuinely one of my favourite ever novels, one of a very limited few I've read twice, and I wish more Yamada was available. Details in the ALT text, including translator, just in case @CiaraNi is watching. 😏📖 #bookstodon @bookstodon

Life prevented me from visiting the Fediverse much recently. Life has started to behave itself better now, so I can drop by the neighbourhood again. It's nice to be back. It's nice to catch up on replies and messages and on what you’re all posting about. Mastodon feels like a relaxed local café where there’s a chair and a welcome waiting for you, even if you haven’t been around for a while.

To say thanks for that, here’s a poster that made me smile.

We need a word for real-life enshittification caused by online culture. Like being unable to find an organisation’s info because they’ve Instagram but no website. Or panicked people being sent a videolink to download to their phone when they ring for an ambulance. Or being excluded from residents' association news if you're not on Facebook. Or having cash payment refused. Or staff in the business you’re physically standing in telling you to find the answer to your question on their website.

CiaraNi,
@CiaraNi@mastodon.green avatar

@hypolite That’s a perfect and awful example of the problem

CiaraNi,
@CiaraNi@mastodon.green avatar

It turns out there is a word for real-life enshittification caused by online culture. Pleasingly, it's a German word. Digitalzwang.

Danke to @mayhem & @woffs for sharing the word via @digitalcourage

Digitalzwang
Digitaltvang
Digital coercion

(And thank you to everyone who shared so many perfect and perfectly awful examples of digitalzwang in this thread. I threw the question out randomly and have been selfishly comforted to discover I'm not alone in my frustration.)
