It's wild how fast SSDs are these days.

I'm SHA256-ing 0.75 of terabyte of data and it's just taking a few minutes.

@schwa We record pre-event clips to an NVME SSD from ~300 cameras concurrently quite happily. Even the write speeds have gone up from where they used to be. And that flip-flops between two files for each one too (keeping pre-event video for context in case we generate an event).

Looking for a CLI tool to snapshot a directory (tree)… and then compare current state of that tree to a snapshot.

(Can't use git. Diffing ls -laR is too noisy…)

This has to be a pre-existing thing surely.

I told ChatGPT to make a graphviz file from the intra-target dependencies of my (overly complex) Package.swift

It seems to do a good job.

Do i trust it without validation/ Hell no.

    Couple of iPhone shots, taken at Crab Cove in Alameda yesterday. These are California Ground Squirrels, and they live in the rocks at the edge of the beach there. Not quite tame, but very used to people so they let you get reasonably close (close enough to get clear photos with the iPhone 15 Pro 3x camera).

    These were taken using portrait mode, providing artificial depth of field.

    @schwa I caved and signed up for the photo package with a small amount of online storage and the Classic options so I can edit on my local machine. There are strange differences between the iOS and MacOS versions, but I do like editing photos on my iPad with the pencil. Chews battery like crazy though.

    The masking, and lens blur simulation are good. The repair tools on LR less so (much better in PS for some reason).

    @schwa Not a huge fan of Adobe, but I have to admit PS and LR are where they shine. I haven't really used the online versions, and I wish LR Classic would read from Photos rather than making me export them to edit on my MBP (on the iPad it will load direct from the photos, even for ones sync'd from my Mac, imported from the R7).

    @schwa Hmm… very clean UI. I don’t use that part. Just launch the classic version of LR and it can open PS with the photo I’m working on loaded,

    It regularly destroys my bird feeder, or knocks it to the ground, but when I go out to admonish it, the thing just comes up to me looking for peanuts. Hard to remain angry with something this cute, especially when it’s likely just hungry too.

    Will try to get most of the ones I post here uploaded there too. So far, the most interest in the few there has been for the duck silhouette I posted a few days ago.

    @schwa Was the same in SF when I was walking from the ferry to the office. Could always tell which ones were going to ignore the red light and blast through the crossing despite the pedestrians trying to cross the street. Honestly, I had more close calls with cyclists in SF than with cars.

    @schwa Just having ISO be something you can change between shots, or leave the camera to just dynamically select is amazing when you compare it to film. And I don't recall ever using anything higher than ISO 800 in film, and even that was rare. 100 and 400 were much more common.

    Apparently, the Instax film camera my daughter has uses ISO 800 film (have to be careful with it at airports), and that surprised me (though given the use case ISO 800 makes sense).

    As a venture backed company, you could take that money and spend it on making your technology better than the offerings of your competitors, or you could spend it lobbying politicians to draft bills that limit the choice of solution to the one your company makes, whether it is the best option or not.

    Luckily, some state governors are not caught out by this blatant attempt at blocking competition & forcing schools to spend their limited funds on just one company.

    @schwa The tug is starting to look more like her namesake in terms of condition! I remember seeing that one regularly when I was commuting on the ferry and she looked much smarter and cleaner back then!

    @GeekAndDad @schwa I don't think you can be concerned about costs if you're looking at film these days. It has to be more for the hobby and satisfaction of taking and developing a great photo.

    I did b&w processing at school, but never tried colour processing. Was something I'd have liked to have done back then. Now, not sure I could go back to film.

    That pretty much captures it. We are living in an age of fools, and not just in regards to climate. Climate change has been an issue for quarter of a century and still there are politicians who refuse to accept it, and religions that preach it is unavoidable. All the while, oil companies make record profits racing to burn everything before they are finally banned.

    Totally out of my budget, but just watching that straight at the end of the lap, with speeds north of 340 km/h is terrifying. And I know from experience that camera footage looks a lot slower than it feels when you're in the driver seat. That is getting close to double the fastest I've ever driven a car...

    These little Anna’s hummingbirds are also regulars in front of our house even though they don’t eat anything from our feeders. They’re also pretty hard to catch in flight (they do like to rest on this tree between feeding trips to a flower below). This time it stopped to try to eat from the blossom tree.
