Yesterday, for the Washington Post opinion section, Kathleen Parker sought to normalize the violent hatred that is demanding trans people be hounded out of public life in a column on the Bud Light boycotts.

Don't lose your capacity to be shocked. This hatred does not belong anywhere, but it certainly shouldn't be in the pages of a major mainstream newspaper, even in the opinion section.

When I came out in 2001, my college professor told me I’d never work with kids.

I landed a teaching Job in 2003 when I graduated. I taught for ten years or more before changing careers.

I know of not one of my students who suffered negative consequences because they had a trans teacher. In fact, I think I probably helped a handful of queer kids be more confident of who they were and to start standing up to bigots.

Fucking hate has no place. Anywhere.

Notes for #OSX. If you use homebrew, run

"brew Install pyusb" before trying to run “python3 -m pip install pyusb”

You'll also need "brew install git" if you don't have it installed :)

I'm Nikki, an #ExPat Brit (who is half Canadian and now a U.S. Citizen) living just west of #PDX, Portland, OR.

As a #trans and #queer person growing up in the 1980s and 90s, Music became a much-needed escape from the real world, and I ended up attending #GSMD in London and becoming a professional #Oboist and #MusicTeacher.

In 2010 I changed career. I'm the owner and co-presenter of @show, where we try to help the world become cleaner, greener, safer, smarter and more equitable through greener transportation and clean energy. (@Aminorjourney is my work account).

It is endlessly fascinating to me that the selling point for Threads is "Celebs & brands are joining in".
To most, I guess that sounds exciting.
But to me, and I assume most of you in the #Fediverse, this just says "People who want to sell stuff and people who want to tell you to buy stuff are here."

And that's just not an attractive proposition at all. 🤷‍♂️

@jace maybe this is why I’m not drawn to it.

  1. I very rarely get fangirly over people. I went to a music and drama college where famous people were always walking around or interacting with us. They’re just people
  2. It’s been reinforced on my work life as again, I know a handful of quite famous people and consider them friends.
  3. I’m more interested in experiences and conversations than being trendy or cool
  4. I’m a gosh darned introvert ;)

Extremely enraged that the online portal used by my landlord's management company is now charging a fee for e-checks (already had one on debit/credit cards).

I will not pay a fee for the privilege of paying my rent, period. Guess I'll be walking in to the office every month and handing them a paper check now.

@e_urq This smacks of someone trying to get extra money out of those who are already struggling to pay the rent and can't walk to the office to drop the cheque off because they're always out working their three jobs during normal office hours.

How long will USB-C be the most common & standard connector for consumer electronics? (there can be updates to voltage and protocols, but it must be backwards compatible to what we have now)

@futurebird @Gurre So, I work in the electric vehicle world (EV Journalist) and I've got to say I'm getting very fed up with the constant charging standard changes in the EV world...

The constant standards change seems to come from companies wanting an edge over the competition, but it's leading to obsolescence at a scary rate. Neither sustainable nor equitable.

The smart way to use technology going forward is to reward companies that provide long life and support for their products well beyond their original production life-cycle.

#RightToRepair #OpenSource both play a part, but we also need legislators to get on to the side of #SustainableManufacturing.

As to your lamp? Yes, you can plug in and it works - but you can ALSO upgrade it to have a better, more efficient lamp, or replace parts as they fail to keep it safe, and functional.

We don't have that right now with the majority of tech or automotive products :(

@Jennifer_Pinkley @futurebird @Gurre Something we're working on at @show is trying to encourage more awareness of used/lower-cost alternatives. Yes, we do still review cars that are too expensive for many, but we're really trying to push hard for more affordable choices (which by the way, depends greatly on where you live)

@kkarhan @futurebird @Gurre @EU_Commission We DO need to decarbonise our transportation rapidly. That means we DO need to end use of the internal combustion engine.

However, that also means we need to:

  1. Invest in affordable, clean, reliable mass transit (most people live in urban and suburban areas)
  2. Incentivise home-working and remote working as a normal, acceptable way to work. Splitting time between home and an office is also a great half-way house that can reduce pollution and eliminate commuting needs.
  3. Invest in more safe cycle paths and remove stigma around micromobility.
  4. Design multi-modal travel that allow easier commutes using multiple different types of travel.
  5. Incentivise car clubs for longer-distance needs.
  6. Expect automakers provide third-party access to EV parts specs and repair procedures AFTER they no-longer make the model (as we often see with ICE vehicles) so replacement parts and after-sales service can remain affordable and easy-to-obtain.

I’ve been driving electric since 2006. My first electric car was £2,000 and I've owned many since. I rarely need to fast charge, even though I live 35 miles from my nearest big city. That's more than most people need to drive in a day, and for context, I just did a 29-mile electric bicycle ride the other day...

CarCulture in the US is very different to Europe, (and one of the reasons I miss living in Europe). But with the right incentives and policies, I think it's possible to make a switch.

@Jennifer_Pinkley @futurebird @Gurre @show statistically very few vehicles need new batteries. In fact, the LEAF is the only one that’s consistently needed TLC. And even then it’s after a significant number of years and a significant number of miles (and even then it’s only a small proportion).

Who should I be following? #BIPOC, #Non-Binary, #TransMasc voices are ones I need to hear more.

I’d also love to hear from more long-transitioned folks because heck, I don’t hear those voices much either (although I myself fit into that category).

Our community is diverse and I’d love to be able to engage with and lift up more of that diversity here.

Reviewing an eBike for the fun of it. Attempted to finish up the range test with a 17mi trip to one of the tallest points in Salem (which also happens to be a winery).

50 miles in and the thing still pulls my fat ass up hills. A+ so far, but I'm done for today.

@CraftComputing nice. I was riding with our DP @BeanieCam on Friday around the coast range foothills on a couple of e-bikes. 29 miles, ~3,500 foot of climbing.

Yes, I need to fix the cable length. I know. I feel so bad about it.

But the reality is that our two 45-drive units need to be back in the rack and operational by tomorrow evening, so that I can use them on Monday when everyone starts back at work :)
