My best #astrophotography picture of 2023: Comet Nishimura rising over Half Dome, September 7. Now reprocessed with better color and contrast than the version I posted in September.

It's a big day for #Hubble snapshot program 15444! Here are 2 more images that just came in for our active galaxy imaging program. First is SWIFT J2015.2+2526 at redshift 0.046. Second is SWIFT J2259.7+2458 (Kaz 320) at redshift 0.035. These are the first HST images of both objects, and they are too small to be resolved well in ground-based observations, so nothing was really known about the structure or morphology of these galaxies until these images were taken today.

If you're in the path of the October 14 annular/partial eclipse and you don't have eclipse glasses yet, now is a good time to order them. Make sure that they meet ISO 12312-2 requirements for eye safety.

You can photograph the Sun during the eclipse using an ND-100000 (16.5-stop) filter or a polymer Solar filter.

NASA has important safety information here for eclipse viewing:

Here are two new #Hubble snapshot images of active galaxies taken on Tuesday for program 15444: SWIFT J1210.1-4637 and SWIFT J2258.9+4054. These are the first HST observations of these galaxies.

Yesterday at Grant Grove in Kings Canyon National Park, it was raining in the afternoon and into the evening, with thick clouds until about 1 am. Finally the clouds started clearing and by 2 am it was mostly clear and the put on a great show. Here are two of my best shots: 20 sec exposures looking east from Panoramic Point, with Jupiter and the Pleiades in the frame. The 2nd shot has 3 trails in a single exposure (not a composite).

3 Perseid meteors seen in a starry sky, with Jupiter and the Pleiades star cluster in the image. Trees in foreground at the bottom, and distant peaks of the Sierra Nevada in the distance. Taken from Panoramic Point, Kings Canyon National Park, August 13, 2023, at 2:10 am.

A new #Hubble image taken today for program 15444. This is active galaxy Swift J2007.0-3433 (redshift 0.0335), seen by HST for the first time. It's a nice example of an overlapping galaxy pair where the dust lane in the spiral arm of J2007 covers part of the disk of its companion galaxy.

Here's the NASA release of the color image for interacting galaxy pair AM 1214-255, made by combining an image from my snapshot program and another image from @dalcantonJD.
