The world's rarest marine mammal, is on the edge of extinction. The plight of cetaceans—whales, dolphins, and porpoises - as a whole is exemplified by the rapid decline of the Vaquita in Mexico....
Red pandas are endangered for several reasons. One of the main reasons is deforestation. Red panda habitats, namely Himalayan forests, are being cut down at an alarming rate each year. Usually, these forests are cleared due to logging operations or to convert the forested area into farmland where crops can be grown and cattle...
The Bateleur is classified as an Endangered species due primarily to anthropogenic causes such as habitat destruction, pesticide usage and persecution.
Threats are both directly and indirectly human-induced, as the wolf's highland habitat, with its high annual rainfall and rich fertile soils, is ideal for agricultural activities. Its proximate threats include habitat loss and fragmentation because of subsistence agriculture, overgrazing, road construction, and livestock...
African Fish Eagles are affected by pesticides in water bodies – specifically a problem in South Africa. Under threat from Furadan poisoning and other natural phenomenon. Where predators like lions and hyenas kill their livestock, they lace the carcass with Furadan. The Fish Eagle - which occasionally will feed on carrion...
"In June, yearlings start moving out. Bears that were born last spring and denned up with mom this past winter are now 18-month old yearlings. If all goes well, they’ll be the size of a medium-sized dog by the end of June, although their fur coats can make them look larger. Yearling females are often allowed to move in next door to their mom. Yearling males are strongly encouraged to move out and go find a new territory of their own, so most young bears wandering far from home are males.
No matter how big and furry they look, yearling bears are all trying to figure out how to live without their mom’s help. They are often lonely and lack the fully developed survival skills of an adult bear. They are also hungry and inquisitive and will instinctively check out anything that seems as if it might be a source of food.
Like human teenagers, they are at a very impressionable stage of life. If they quickly discover that human places should be avoided, they will learn to support themselves as wild bears. If they find the backyard pickings are easy, they start down a road that is often a dead end. No matter how cute they look and how hungry they are, the best thing you can do to help yearlings grow up wild is to make sure there’s nothing around your home to attract them. "
Great Blue Heron gone fishing. They are large water birds with long, sharp beaks. At first look it appeared as if he was just walking around with this large fish laying across his bill. The fish was so heavy, he couldn't even lift his head. The outcome is amusing, so follow the link for the whole story. It won't all fit here.
Well, I've managed to get a bit closer recently – and just as I'd set my camera to slow-motion video mode, this other barn swallow got too close for comfort, it seems!
The sparrow nest box had a whole new batch of babies under my nose! I was even checking the box but well...I think the photos of this nest explain how I missed the eggs. I had to get the scope camera way down in there to see babies, but I heard them so I knew they were there. #birds#birdwatching#wildlife#nestwatch
Just dance! I am sure this is some sort of behavior in an effort to bring food to the surface, but this Tri Colored Heron was gleefully dancing back and forth across the water. So much fun to watch.
