I want to build / get a travel router / hardware VPN which connects to a network wirelessly or via RJ-45 and creates a new Wi-Fi (& maybe a wired connection to the new network) to which I can connect my devices and everything gets tunneled either through Mullvad or through my home network. Maybe it can even throw the traffic into Pi-hole before tunneling.

Microsoft has pushed out an update that breaks VPN access in Windows 10 and 11. This after the fact that we all learned Windows 11 will have ads, plus Microsoft may try to shame users with a watermark for those who do not accept their recommended settings or use their latest recommend hardware.
I work, take calls, bank, stream movies, stream music, edit documents, photos, videos, print, game, shop, and I do so ad free, watermark free, activation free, while safely and securely using an optional VPN, and I do this all on Linux (Ultramarine Linux, KDE spin).

Today I've been really busy and I'm exhausted, but I wanted to share the "gem" of the day.
A colleague (whom I've never spoken to before) calls me and explains that they need to connect a client's server with their management system. To communicate, the client's server needs to be reachable via telnet. I explain that I can't open telnet to the world, but if necessary, I can set up a VPN of their choice (Wireguard, OpenVPN, even Zerotier if it's helpful) and grant telnet access through the VPN. Not ideal, but better than nothing...
That said, the colleague attacks me: "Here you are, with these VPNs - don't you understand they're used to spy on us? Governments intercept all VPNs to steal our personal data." I try to clarify that I may not have explained myself well and that I don't mean using the famous commercial VPNs, but a private VPN access to allow the two machines to communicate securely. No luck: "Haven't you realized yet? Every time we open a VPN, they know and intercept us."
En résumé :
– un VPN, c’est utiliser la connexion de quelqu’un d’autre,
– un VPN n'est utile à presque personne... sauf à ceux qui touchent les primes d'affiliation pour inonder le Web d'articles sponsorisés.
– la plupart des VPN grand public sont opérés par des sociétés aux pratiques des plus opaques, implantés dans des pays aux législations très "souples", et n'offrent pas la moindre garantie en matière de protection des données.
Petite précision : les VPN "no-log' sont situés dans des pays étrangers où le droit ne leur impose pas de conserver des journaux de connexion (et encore...).

Exemple de 2020 sur le fait que les VPN, même s'ils annoncent le contraire, conservent vos logs :

Les sept fournisseurs en question "ont laissé les données personnelles sensibles de leurs utilisateurs exposées sur internet. Les données étaient accessibles à tous, sans aucune mesure de sécurité.
Parmi les informations dévoilées au grand jour, on compte notamment les logs de connexion, les adresses, les informations de paiement, les mots de passe et l'activité de navigation des utilisateurs" pendant 18 jours.
Bref, ce qu'il faut retenir est qu'un #VPN n'est utile que dans un cadre professionnel ou pour outrepasser les géorestrictions relatives aux contenus en ligne.
Un VPN ne vous rend pas anonyme. Il chiffre. C'est tout.
Enfin, n'utilisez pas de #VPN gratuit. Généralement leur leidmotiv est de vendre vos données, vous pister, bref conserver des tas d'informations sur vous.
Sorry #VPN wie es momentan beworben wird war noch nie Sicher und ein klarer #MITM und nur bei den wenigsten Anbietern auch vertrauenswürdig - Da sind ganz dubiose & gruselige Firmengeflechte im Hintergrund. Dann kommen ein paar #Dumps und bestätigen deine Befürchtungen. VPN macht durch aus Sinn in einem #Business#Netzwerk aber eben nicht so.
