The Lessico Veneto — Lexicon of the Veneto — by Fabio Mutinelli from 1851 is another of those must-have books for anybody interested in Venetian history, which is exact why it was written.
Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti is a palace in Venice, Italy, not far from the Ponte dell'Accademia and next to the Palazzo Barbaro on the Grand Canal of Venice. The palace was erected in 1565. In the 19th century it was internally modernised and externally enriched in Venetian Gothic style, with rich window framing, by a series of grand owners.

Maybe this book wasn't the best way of beginning my investigation of the history of #Venice, but its focus on the art history of the city was extremely enlightening all the same. It made clear how much the cult of Saint Mark was central to the city, its society, and all layers of its government - and how the city maintained its independence from Rome all those centuries despite being nominally Catholic.
