I keep thinking back to this Microlino at Fully Charged Live. Reusable water bottles became acceptable, being vegan is now cool, and so is wearing vintage clothes. So who is going to step up to the critical task of making small cars fashionable? The trend towards giant SUVs is ludicrous, incredibly wasteful and dangerous, and bad for our cities. If you must use a car, it should be as small as possible. Where are the micro-car visionaries/influencers? WE NEED YOU. #cars#SUV#climate
Why, London? Why do this to yourself? It’s a beautifully sunny and pleasant evening, and cycling home almost every street was like this: a stationary car jam. I’m certain that 50% of these drivers could easily have used an e-bike or e-cargo bike, 20% could have been on public transport or walking and 20% of the rest could have been in some sort of mini-EV-van that takes up far less space. And if they were all doing that, there would be enough space for everyone. #traffic#London#bikes
This month, Lisbon will become the latest European city to bar thru-traffic from its city centre. The plan, to be introduced for a 3-month trial period, will see cars barred from driving thru (but not driving to) the heart of #Lisbon’s downtown. Via CityLab.
In Finland, motorists are supposed to give way to pedestrians at a pedestrian crossing, but not to cyclists riding across in the same situation. This is complicated by the fact that some light electric scooters and similar are classed as pedestrians, but more powerful ones as bicycles!
In practice I feel that motorists paradoxically are more likely to give way to a cyclist than a pedestrian waiting at a zebra crossing!
Wonder how this has been resolved in other countries? #traffic
Ok. Maybe it's time to #introduce myself - again - since moving to another instance. I usually work on knowledge for #road authorities in the field of #transport#planning and #traffic#engineering. Special interest goes to all types of #smart#mobility. In the mean time, I try to do a PhD research project on #community#wellbeing and transport #policy. Living in #Ede, NL. 2 kids, 2 chickens, 1 spouse. I love #painting and #drawing but time is finite and procrastination always finds me.
Kia ora toot friends. (Hello in Māori language)
Tonight I am bringing some #transport, #bikes, #cycling, #urbanism and #antiCar#memes.
I hope you enjoy them and are radicalised like I am. Once you start seeing how we've been trapped by #carDependency you cannot unsee it again.
Let's fight for space for people, cities that are walkable, accesible, clean, green and safe.
Of course, please contribute your own memes to the thread and also radicalise your family, workmates and friends!
City governments, urban developers, fossil fuel companies, #road builders and car manufacturers have created a self reinforcing ecosystem, where they all get wealthier by depending on each other. Convincing us of the lie that we do need one more lane. This is the one that will fix everything. This bypass, this new road, this expansion, once we get it done #traffic will be solved. For good.
But it is never true and yet we try again, hoping for the silver bullet in the next lane we build.
Just a quick #introduction for those who might be interested... I'm an #av / Live event technical director who's been doing #lighting, #video and #sound since I was 15.
I also work with a startup who delivers camera-based, predictive, pedestrian crossing tech with installations in the UK, France and a demo site in Canada. #traffic#ml
I'm generally in my element plugging something in, wiring up a control system or making devices talk.
A belated #introduction. I am apparently user number 000017026 on @mastodon.social, signing up long ago, though I haven't been active until recently, spending too much time on the other site as @trnsprtst.
