When we lose an old building, we lose not just the architect's vision for its exterior, but all the other elements as well, like internal layouts, which can reveal so much about our social history. We lose all the little design features we all too often take for granted, but which make each building unique, like sculptures, and tilings and fonts and metalwork.
Decorative stone from Kiloran House set into a wall of Glasgow Clyde College Anniesland on Hatfield Drive in the west of Glasgow. Designed by Stewart and Paterson, Kiloran House was constructed in 1905 and was demolished in 2007. I'm presuming these are the initials of James Thomson Tullis, for whom it was originally built, and this and a couple of other similar carved stones are the only traces left of this once grand house.
Cast iron kerb protectors/wheel guides leading off Canal Street in the north of Glasgow. These originally led into a sawmill situated behind a block of tenements on Swan Street. This pretty much all that remains of both.
The cart entrance to the old Crown Mill on Washington Street in the Anderston Area of Glasgow. This Italianate building was constructed in 1862, but all that is now left is the boarded up ground floor. However, you can still see traces of the company's name as a ghost sign above the door.
Cell block behind the old Partick Police Station on Gullane Street in Glasgow. The station itself opened in the 1850s and finally closed in the 1990s. It also served as Maryhill Police Station in the original series of the police drama Taggart.
