I'm headed to #NYC and though I've been there many times, I'm bringing a guidebook. Because I'm an #infrastructure nerd, and this is no ordinary guidebook.

Networks of New York by Ingrid Burrington describes the #networking infrastructure in the city: pavement markings, visible equipment, and locations of key buildings such as carrier hotels.

Yeah, this is what I look for on vacation. 🤷

Two pages from Networks of New York showing pavement markings for "Characteristics of a Duct" and "Companies"
Two pages from Networks of New York. The left page has the heading "Carrier Hotels and Data Centers: Architecture for the Internet", and the right page has a map of Manhattan with several datacenters marked.
A page from Networks of New York describing network connectivity in subways and depicting a ceiling-mounted antenna.

I was stupid today. I was wondering why on Earth my Ethernet connection between my PC and the home server was stuck on 100Mbit/s. I spent hours trying to find a software solution. Then it hit me, maybe the cable is incapable of transferring at faster rates? Yes, yes it was the cable... I feel so dumb for not checking my cables before this...

Boss: why is this service using IPv6?
Me: I just wanted to use IPv6 once in my career for a production service. Seems sad people did all that work for nothing.

Currently trying to configure my access point to put different clients on the same SSID into separate VLANs. Wondering how this works regarding client-to-client and broadcast traffic w/o client isolation turned on. Will it just work as exepected or will I leak traffic between VLANs 🤔

Don't take the unnecessary risk of running #Wireshark as #root. Instead, create your capture file (.cap, .pcap) with #tcpdump (sudo tcpdump -i eth0 -w file.pcap), then open it for analysis in Wireshark as your regular non-root user. 👍

In the 80s when I first glanced across the term Token Ring in computer magazines, not really reading the articles because networking didn't have much to do with me back at that time, I was reading it as "Tolkien Ring." That's what I thought it was called for a few years, actually.

It sounded way more badass than it actually was.

ONE THREE-BYTE FRAME TO RULE THEM ALL

(There were a few Token Ring networks still in place that we supported when I worked in tech support at UVA back in the mid-90s.)

I’m a mid level network engineer, who does MikroTik things. I have plenty of experience with Linux and end user service and support.

Boosts appreciated, and if you are hiring or know someone that is hiring for network/Linux, tag me!

About 25 years ago, a couple of colleagues and I printed up poster-sized versions of our 10 #Networking Commandments. I was afraid the last one would soon become obsolete. Boy was I wrong. That is probably my favorite.

  1. Thou shalt above all, maintain the integrity of the network.
  2. Thou shalt have a long term strategic direction.
  3. Thou shalt always opt for quality before expediency.
  4. Thou shalt meet the requirements, exceed the expectations and anticipate the needs of users.
  5. Thou shalt benefit from a successful implementation by careful project planning.
  6. Thou shalt provide reliability, availability and serviceability.
  7. Thou shalt maintain detailed, timely and accurate documentation.
  8. Thou shalt commit to continuous training.
  9. Thou shalt test in a test environment.
  10. Thou shalt install and label cables properly.

Creating NAS for dad to replace WD MyCloud, mostly media storage for playback on TV.
Did one for myself, thought I knew what I was doing. For myself I just set it to default SHR hybrid RAID.
Set up dad's with 1 drive and thought could add second for more storage, turns out no, more drives adds redundancy, which isn't what I wanted for this. So deleting storage pool and starting again with JBOD instead.
I take this as a learning experience. #tech #NAS #networking

After any significant change to your #firewall setup, create a #backup of the config. For example, with #OPNsense, go to System > Configuration > Backups > Download configuration. Get into the habit of doing this. Forgetting to do so after happily tinkering away could put a serious dampener on your weekend! 👍 🔥 🛡️ #networking #cybersecurity #admin

Need to make a business card? Then read on.

I found an app called HiHello (Android and iOS) during my insomnia today.

You can create your virtual business card with all the necessary info, including all your social media links.

Plus, the app creates a QR code for your card to share easily with others.

I might use it at the next conference I attend, but I'm not sure because I already have another business card model.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the tip!
