A brown winged female pileated woodpecker has been coming regularly to the feeder. She stands out because usually, pileated woodpeckers have black wings feathers. I don't know the significance of the brown feathers on her wings, but at least they help me tell her apart from the other female pileated woodpeckers.

This is a closeup of the brown feathers on the wing of the female pileated woodpecker. I first saw her last winter and it seems that she is acquiring more brown feathers as time goes on, not fewer.

A Red Shouldered Hawk stopped by the telephone pole near my house a couple days ago, I suppose looking for lunch. What a magnificent bird.

The center of our galaxy is streaked with puzzling filaments of radio emission, some of them hundreds of light years long.

Now we have a clue to how they work. At least one of them seems to be energized by a pulsar -- a tiny, rapidly spinning stellar corpse.

There are lots of clickbait-y stories circulating about the invasive Joro spider.

For context, Joro spiders are shy, harmless to humans, and they eat many common flying insects, including mosquitoes, lanternflies, and stinkbugs.

In the eastern US, you're likely to see their webs on power lines. You are NOT likely to see them hanging out on your hand.

It wasn't easy for me to take a photo of this pretty wasp, it didn't want to pose for the camera and it moved a lot.

Imagine a world without abundant plant life, without sunlight and rain, the warmth of light, and the normalcy of one season following upon the heels of another.

It would be a drab, sere, cold place, the kind you see on dystopian science fiction movies, a hostile environment where humans and animals would not want to, or possibly could not, live.
