164 years ago today, Lincoln gave his "RIGHT MAKES MIGHT" speech at Cooper Union. William Cullen Bryant published the speech on the front page of The Post. While in NYC, Lincoln stayed at The Astor Hotel. Read about Bryant, Cooper, and Astor in #NamingGotham.

p.s. While in NYC, Lincoln sat for this famous Matthew Brady Photo. Lincoln claimed that the NYC day (and Brady and Cooper) made him president. #history #NYC #newyork #Lincoln #historybuff #historymatters #book @histodons @history

Since it is Black History Month, I thought I would share this blog post I wrote about Jane Matilda Bolin--the first Black woman to serve as a judge in the United States. Her story is pretty inspiring. And, New York City should rename the Queens-Midtown Tunnel to honor her! #NamingGotham #history #historymatters #blackhistorymonth #blacklawyers #NewYorkCity #NYC #histodon #awardwinning #book @histodons #historybuff #historyteacher https://www.historyinthemargins.com/2023/04/25/jane-matilda-bolin-another-guest-post-by-rebecca-bratspies/

Today is apparently National "Pretend to Be a Time Traveler Day" in Canada. I'm traveling back 400 years to watch Anne Hutchinson wipe the floor with Puritan Governor John Winthrop during her sedition trial. Where are you going? #NYC #Massachusetts #History #NewYork #NamingGotham #historymatters #awardwinning #books #histodon #booklovers #iykyk @histodons

Exactly one year ago today, I unboxed the first copies of Naming Gotham. I got to spend a year sharing on podcasts, giving public lectures, & doing news interviews with PBS, Daily News, Hellgate (+ so many more). What an adventure! Thank you all for the support.

P.S. Books make great presents! @histodons

One of the best things about Naming Gotham has been the opportunities it created for me to reconnect with old friends and former students. @histodons

Happy 80th Birthday to Billie Jean King. She is DEFINITELY one of the in . Researching and writing the chapter about her was inspiring! I got to relive watching her wipe the floor with Bobby Riggs as a kid. Plus I learned how she has been a leader on and + rights @histodons

This was a really fun podcast to record. I mean, who doesn't love the opportunity to talk about how great Jackie Robinson was (and I definitely have a soft-spot for Adam Clayton Powell Jr.) @histodons https://www.battingthebreeze.com/beyond-the-baseball-color-line.

On 11/5/68, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to Congress. "Fighting" Shirley Chisholm rocked the House to its foundations. We all benefit from her trailblazing legacy. Definitely one of the heroes! @histodons https://www.amazon.com/Naming-Gotham-Villains-Rogues-Heroes/dp/1467151408

Seriously New Jersey?? Who thought it would be a good idea to name the entry to a suburban neighborhood "Loyalist Way"??? Right near a whole lot of Revolutionary War battle sites??? And of course the neighborhood is "Wellington West." The practically writes itself. @histodons

Thinking today about Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., New York's first Black congressman (elected 1948.) His grandparents had been enslaved. In Congress, Powell proposed amendments prohibiting federal funding of any activity that racially discriminated. For years, his "Powell amendment" was purely symbolic--it never passed . . . Enemies accused him of grandstanding. In 1964, the Powell Amendment became Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.
