Rob has been finessing all kinds of bits and pieces for a long time now, and you should be able to get some pretty complex stuff working in there. Feedback and code contributions very welcome.
Ah, the lead up to Google Summer of Code (GSoC). Weeks of excitement, and the promise of a bright future. And lots of time to absolutely torpedo your chances of working with MetaBrainz or your open-source organisation of choice. Here’s how.
#strawberry music player has the best support for musicbrainz and listenbrainz that i've found. some stuff still wouldn't read… it turns out they were ALAC files that are only somewhat compatible with ID3v2.4. songs with multiple artists would vanish. transcoded to flac, sorted. #ListenBrainz#MusicBrainz@metabrainz
MusicBrainz Picard is really good, open source and cross-platform. If your music folder is a chaotic mess of unsorted, untagged files, give it a try, it works like magic.
for last.fm users dragging their feet like me, because all those 'smart' quotes blow up your last.fm stats: there's an option to dumbify them. i wish i had known this a year earlier #MusicBrainz#LastFM#picard#unicode
Use arcane technology to find your favourite artist and explore their related artists. Watch the pretty colours. Listen to the music. Race your friends from Napalm Death to Britney Spears. Increase the web size and gasp as the artists jiggle into each other. Or simplify your life by exploring a web size of 0.
So behind with a lot of stuff because I've been busy with adding new artists, information, tracking official #SNS accounts, and fixing things over at #MusicBrainz.
MusicBrainz is a #PublicDomain database for anything related to #music. Artists, labels, tracks, albums, groups/bands, stage names, even instruments, and roles.
The database of MusicBrainz is actually used by a lot of other websites, one good example is the music tracker #LastFM and MusicBrainz sister project #ListenBrainz.
If you love to help the community, go check it out!
Or, if you've been building databases, but the info is behind non-open, non-sharing licenses, why not give your time and effort to a Public Domain database? Help the community, and tell your employer to use their database instead!
Hundreds of millions of data points entered by people selflessly spending their time and energy to help others, for 23 years now. Amazing. Thank you. Onwards, and upwards!
@metabrainz with the introduction of artist pages on #ListenBrainz, will there be a field in #MusicBrainz to enter the artist biography given that not all artists are notable enough to have a #Wikipedia entry?
@okwithmydecay We have an artist annotation field in #musicbrainz where that kind of free-text data can be stored - but we don’t currently pull it into the ListenBrainz entities. I imagine information in there will be relevant for LB users more often than not, but that might need some discussion.
