I'm trying to put together a tutorial on systems-ish things for data scientists (https://gvwilson.github.io/sys-tutorial/). One of the reasons I'm struggling is that the examples are much, much harder to automate than those in the SQL tutorial (https://gvwilson.github.io/sql-tutorial/). I know it's possible, but running multiple processes concurrently, some of them inside Docker containers—it's a lot more work, and leaves my system littered with after-effects that (ironically) make reproducibility really hard.

Getting "Dropbox unexpectedly quit" messages on windows 11 ... anybody else? THinking of just getting something like CLoudMounter and being rid of the whole stupid thing at this point ... #grumble

Logic, it's hard!

  1. Why do people deliberately stop talking, or making sounds in general, when you, a #blind person, walk towards them? People, make your regular sounds. Sounds are helpful.
  2. Why do people shout in your face just as you're reaching an obstacle, thus distracting the hell out of you? Even worse, combined with 1, it can be a jump-scare. Really not helpful! This latter case has just happened to me, and I nearly dropped my groceries.
    I don't often #Rant #Grumble, but sometimes… 😖

If you didn't •ask• for my availability before picking a date for work that needs my involvement, don't try to make me feel guilty for having a conflict and declining the meeting invitation. That's on you. #Grumble

wait is it true - someone here will just know - I can't actually run the ray-traced version of Portal without Microsoft cough Windows?!?!

Aren't Valve boxes a derivative of Debian? And it's by Valve still, right?

I see Find My Past have updated their transcribed baptisms for Derbyshire.

When you try to browse the records by parish FMP don't show the surname field. You can see the child's name and the first names of the parents in the list but to see the surname you have to click the individual records.

How hostile is that?

Yes ... I know there is a search facility and I know about wild card searches but ... !!

I presume it's a conscious decision by FMP.

We are literally one day into the new year, and already there is a new renovation project ongoing in my trappa: crash bang wallop, the sound of Schumpetarian "creative destruction" in its most commonplace manifestation, and probably the only one that has any sustained economic impact, i.e. propping a shonky and wasteful industry devoted to keeping the landfills growing.

websites really have gone insane. you and your 722(!) partners? what kind of a promiscuous partnership are you trying to involve me in?

and you and they will use my data for legitimate interests, but I can object? then it's not a legitimate interest, if an objection would do anything.

this whole message is a clusterduck

and no, i do not consent to any of that processing

Wow. Total absolute fail trying to see my messages on the social security website. Completely broken in both Safari and Firefox on mac. I can see there's a page underneath when I inspect, but nothing works, even with all the blockers turned off. Some text visible on a white background, what may be a navigation thing in some other browser. Broken broken broken.

spare me from app developers who’ve dreamt up unique, “improved” solutions to the problem of customers remembering serial numbers.

these solutions typically make lots of presumptions that are usually — but not always — true.

toss a couple of minor exceptions (e.g. data loss, email address change) and it becomes a massive pain to deal with in a moment when the very last thing you need is one more pain in the ass.

they’re optimizing for their own convenience.

know what would be awesome? if macOS didn’t log me out of Messages just for rebooting (and, adding insult to injury, notifying me of “a new Mac on my account”).

blah, blah, security, blah, what if someone logs into your ? Wouldn’t you want to know?!?

APPLE’S ENDLESS CRIES OF “WOLF!” HAVE TRAINED ME TO IGNORE THESE WARNINGS.

Plus it just makes them look clueless.

Like the endless “your wallet was detached from your phone at the address we know to be your home” and the “your AirPods are following you” stupidity.

Does anyone at the Province of New Brunswick know/care/understand what a colossal pain in the ass it is that people calling out from it are identified as “No Caller ID” — which lumps them in with all the telemarketers (which the phone companies refuse to filter out) and also means you can’t directly return their calls? #grumble
