I just did a fresh install in the past week-ish to migrate to KDE from GNOME, and wanted a fresh start.
ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 (AMD): Debian 12 with GNOME
Previously ran Pop!_OS with the development version of COSMIC DE. I wanted a Debian-based laptop to more closely reflect the Debian servers that I use to host my Wait Wait Stats stuff. I'm not going testing or unstable, since I don't run those on my servers.
Surface Pro 3: Fedora 40 (KDE spin)
I did a fresh install this week to clear out some of the lingering issues from an install of a pre-release version of the KDE spin of Fedora 40.
I initially wanted to see how FreeBSD would run on the Surface Pro 3, but I didn't want to tempt fate as I sometimes take the Surface with me on the go.

Here is my new GNU/Linux distribution guide about Debian KDE 12, the right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024! Also about three major problems with GNU/Linux distros that will drive away all professional artists, IMO, and how I got kicked out of the Fedora KDE ecosystem with F40, which imposed Plasma6 and Wayland. I hope it helps other artists here!
Hello @davidrevoy
Thank you very much for this very detailed guide. 🤩
And welcome in the #debian community ! 😀
Remember that the debian 's strength lies in its social contract : https://www.debian.org/social_contract
Normally you shouldn't have to change linux distribution anymore.
Personally, I've been using debian + KDE since 2008 (after trying RedHat, Mandrake/Manjaro and Ubuntu) and wouldn't change a thing for the world. !
Looking for recommendations on beginner-friendly #Linux distributions.
I don't need any novice help, this is for a friend who wants to move away from Windows.
They need the usual productivity software, web browser, mail, Word, Excel, etc. which will probably be easy to replace. I advised them to start working with #LibreOffice now, to see if they feel comfortable with it. They also need some more exotic software, but I'm confident it will work fine with Wine. We'll test that out soon.
They're also very privacy-sensitive, so I'm currently discounting #Ubuntu.
@ehrba My answer not as a #GIS professional but enthusiast and long time #Linux user: Any distro you feel comfortable with. If you're expecting the latest releases, try some rolling release. Otherwise, my usual suggestion, #Ubuntu, has been misbehaving a little with #snap (#chrome sometimes not being able to launch or access user's files because of a technical issue), so probably not that. I'm a #Debian user, so my personal suggestion is Debian stable or testing.
@bananabob@mdione@ehrba I was just thinking about that, actually, but I like that LM gives you access to almost anything already refined for #Ubuntu, but there's also reason I'm not using Ubuntu, and it's not the desktop design. What I think I will actually do is, once I get more comfortable, move to #Debian + gnome, but I need to learn the system way better before I can handle that! I can't even understand the instructions manuals for Debian yet!
Giving #OpenSuse Leap a try. Would like to go from my rather moody #ArchLinux to a more stable system. Feels like I learned everything I could in terms of usage, now I want something that needs less maintaining and gives me more time to do other things.
Given I do not trust US companies (not necessarily because of the company, but the legislation they have to follow) #Fedora or anything #Ubuntu was an absolute no-go. And #Debian just isn't modern enough, despite being dead-stable. 😉 #Linux
@array
Even if you need newer stuff: There most likely is a repo, package, container, etc. available to get it 😉
I for example get Ansible directly via pipx - just because I like to have the newest release.
2 years old should be totally fine for #Debian
New hardware also mostly works - it rather is bleeding edge tech that get's fiddly.
(Besides, building a kernel if nothing else is available is also not too hard)
@itsfoss
Amazing. Incredible! Been waiting for something like this.
Now let's hope they keep it open/libre and painless (I'm talking about you, nvidia!) I'm very satisfied with AMD now, but this is very promising for a powerhouse yet lightweight laptop.
@alex Ça me rappelle ma période #Gentoo, ça !
