Haaretz Editorial: The Shame and the Shambles of Israel's Policy on Gaza Aid
It explains who are attacking the aid trucks and why the Israeli law enforcement officials did nothing to stop them. #gaza@palestine
The Western leaders are allying themselves with these extremists. Far-right religious and ethnonationalist extremism is fundamentally incompatible with any liberal democratic regime. We are going back to the 1920s.
Even if #BenjaminNetanyahu may not be an extremist himself - the jury is out on that one! - his political survival depends on people like #ItamarBen_Gvir - who is the minister to whom those police report - and #BezalelSmotrich - who is doing his best - or worst if you prefer - to keep any humanitarian aid from going through the port of #ashdod . He cannot overrule them and stay in office - unlike #RishiSunak who was able to sack #SuellaBraverman and remain in office.
Literally took one 20 min phone call in which Biden demanded immediate ceasefire & threatened to cut off aid, & magically a border opens providing critical humanitarian aid to Gaza.
USA always had this leverage. Meanwhile 32K Palestinians killed. smh
This is good news as far as it goes. However it remains to be seen how far #israel will go to implement what has been agreed and how quickly. Will the customs authorities in #ashdod - who report to #BezalelSmotrich - actually allow shipments through or will some way - no doubt entirely coincidental and inadvertent - be found to delay or even block them? Assuming that they do get through to the crossing points will they be able to enter #gaza or will demonstrators block them?
#GazaFamine / David Cameron: Israel should open its port at Ashdod north of Gaza
[…] U.S. officials said building such a facility could take weeks, yet hospitals in northern Gaza are already reporting children dying of malnutrition. The U.N. says opening up more land routes should remain the priority.
[…] "It's going to take time to build," British foreign minister David Cameron told reporters, adding that Israel should open its port at #Ashdod north of #Gaza for more aid deliveries in the meantime.
