'The J. Paul Getty Museum announced today nearly 88,000 images of artworks from its collection are now available for free download on its Open Content database under Creative Commons Zero (CC0).'
'... a section of Italy’s constitution protects images of the nation’s cultural heritage and historical memory. A related law enables the country’s public institutions, such as museums, to request concession fees for commercial reproductions of artworks of cultural heritage, regardless of their copyright status.'
'Cultural institutions have created a “mess” by claiming and enforcing new rights over the reproduction images of works in their collections.
This allows museums and other organisations to refuse requests for the use of the images in education or research or charge high fees. This impedes free and creative expression and amounts to censorship, according to Dr Andrea Wallace from the University of Exeter Law School.'
'The student groups each chose a specific part of the garden for their inspiration... During the process, they identified insects that can directly benefit from the structures and created designs that would allow plants to grow within and around them over time.'
Throwing this out on the #fediverse: with Meta scrapping #artworks from billions of accounts between Facebook and Instagram to train their AI, I'm seeing a strong feeling of helplessness, of "where do I go from here and how do I protect myself?"
There's a move to go to image sharing platforms with #Glaze and #Nightshade options growing.
How is the @pixelfed crowd dealing with this? Is #pixelfed safe from scrapping and crawling while showcasing artists?

Some of my favourite autumnal artworks are by Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer (1865 - 1953) French artist and leading exponent of symbolism and Art Nouveau. His works include paintings, drawings, ceramics, furniture and interior design. Even his "Wisteria Dining Room" has an autumnal feeling #autumn#Dhurmer#artist#artworks#ArtHistory#leaves
(1/6) The theme exhibition at the Ars Electronica Festival “(Co)Owning More-than-Truth" argues that while #truth is crucial for progress, we need more than that. It suggests using truth as a tool to navigate complex knowledge structures and adapt to changing truths. The exhibit features various #artworks exploring truths from Earth's ecosystems, data collection, and information processing, challenging existing knowledge systems. Let’s take a look at some of them ...
There was a post from another time in another place about how certain #artworks were incompatible with a lot of video #encoding techniques, especially stippling (?)
