just installed arch and I3 on my second laptop. i missed this so much.. but ive also forgotten most of the keybinds so now i need to go relearn them lol
#ArchLinux I've had to manually regenerate my initramfs twice in the last year, before that I never had such a problem. Are there any common reasons for this happening? Am I doing something wrong? Fortunately it's not hard to fix but it sure is annoying!
You know, every Linux distro has its own unique charm, and I love that about the Linux ecosystem. But there’s something incredibly rewarding about being able to build your operating system, piece by piece, tailored to your needs, like fitting together pieces of a puzzle. And that’s exactly what Arch lets you do!
Arch Linux comes with a ‘bare minimum’ base and allows you to add on top of that. It means no bloatware, no unwanted apps. It’s like building your dream home, starting from the foundation, and adding only what you love and need. You are in full control, and there’s no ‘standard’ package set that determines what your system should look like.🏗️
Then comes the famed rolling release model, which means updates are continuous, and you never have to reinstall or jump through hoops to upgrade to the latest and greatest. It’s like being on a river that’s constantly moving, keeping you on the cutting edge of software development. ⏩
The package manager, Pacman, is another gem, making package management simple and efficient. And did I mention the AUR (Arch User Repository)? It’s a treasure trove that contains pretty much every piece of software you could need, and if it’s not there, you can package it yourself and share it with the community! 📦👥
I know, some people might say Arch can be demanding, especially for beginners. And yes, there’s a learning curve, but isn’t that true for anything worth doing? With the Arch Wiki by your side (it’s nothing short of an encyclopedia, really! 📚), the learning becomes a journey, an adventure!
In a nutshell, Arch Linux gives you freedom, full control, keeps you at the forefront of software releases, and offers you a vibrant community to learn from and contribute to. So, why not take the plunge and give it a try? It’s an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything else. 🚀
Today Arch Linux, the project behind mkinitcpio, systemd-adoption and a global leader in volunteer open source solutions, announced it is forking publicly available Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and will develop and maintain a RHEL-compatible distribution available to all without restrictions. Over the next few years, Arch plans to invest more than 10 million tacos into this project.
For those running #ArchLinux with #dracut, beware of upgrading, dracut 059 still doesn't carry the patch to fix invalid generated initramfs. This occurs on systemd >= 253 because stricter sandboxing is employed here and the invalid initramfs silently worked before.
Probably time to migrate back to mkinitcpio but now in combination with systemd's #uki and kernel_install.
I'd really like to ditch Gnome and move to Sway or Hyprland, but unfortunately, I own an AMD-based laptop.
This means no thunderbolt for my multi-monitor setup, and I have to rely on evdi/displaylink.
There is a patch out there for Sway and Hyprland, but I can't make it work: they don't see my external display, even if the displaylink service is running and evdi module is loaded. Of course. on Gnome everything works fine.
I'm on Arch. Does anyone have a solution? I searched everywhere, but I couldn't find anything.
Hi Thunderbird family, we have just a bit of housekeeping and cleanup to do before we release version 115, so we're going to hold off until tomorrow (Tuesday) to press the launch button.
Thank you so much for your patience. We know it's been a long wait. We just want to ensure the smoothest launch possible!
@thunderbird As an #ArchLinux :arch_linux: user, i suddenly remembered this morning that based on history, it might easily be a month or three before we Archers see it in the repos, given afaik the Arch #Thunderbird Maintainer has a pretty conservative update philosophy for major productivity pkgs like TB.
If so, i might need to manually d/l & install the direct-from-TB pkg, like i did for the previous two or three major version jumps, & run that until the repo eventually catches up. 🤷♀️
[Adding this coz i'm feeling mischievously teasy] ... Or, i could use #Betterbird... 😇
If I make the bootable USB from the older release of #archlinux, it will boot, but... pacman gonna pacman, what can you do?
It's my fault for getting trapped inside this anti-compatibility nexus where nothing plugs in without an aftermarket adapter, that is, as a lifestyle figuratively as well as literally
If it's a problem with #grub, though, maybe there's a workaround with another bootloader
@9to5linux
👋 Thanks for this.
To the users: please be aware that the pkgbuild hosting/git repo of #FCGU is currently in a restructuring workload, because of #ArchLinux gitlab migration and me adopting this.
It's far from good at this point and will still take a lot of time until I feel comfortable with it.
As always, expect things to kill your system and eat your babies. :blobcatmorningcofe:
hell yeah!!!
It was a nightmare to get the nvidia drivers working (or a working display for that matter), but I've made it to #Debian .
It's probably not that hard, but I've lost some hair on this one.
Thx Internet for the help, thx #Linux for the fun.
Next might be #archlinux but for now, while empowered, I also feel like a drained battery.
Planning to install #nixos on my new laptop today! Coming from #archlinux on my desktop I’m excited for something new, especially for reproducing my development environment (which I have found myself needing more often than I would have thought!)
Any advice or tips for a new #nix user? Or just for #linux on a laptop in general, since I’ve only ever used it on desktops?
I had a really nice #LinuxGaming moment last night
I finally formatted one of my 1 TB SSDs as EXT4 to make room for #Steam games on my #ArchLinux install.
Then, I installed Transport Fever 2 and played it through my #SteamLink
And you know what? It just worked. It was a miracle! I just happily played for an hour without even noticing I'm not running #Windows. Zero tinkering. Thanks #Valve. ☺
Today when I tuned my #ArchLinux setup on my work machine (a thinkpad x1c) I accidentally discovered it has a working touch screen... fun :) Also, I found #syncthing - so very handy when migrating docs between old and new machines...
ATTENTION ARCH USERS!
The AUR is experiencing malicious packages, please hold off on installing AUR packages unless needed. The things affected are:
login data
filesystems nuked
update: the user who reported this seems slightly untrustworthy, i will look further
update 2.0: after further investigation thankfully the pkgbuilds look safe (they reported unityhub), probably a false alarm thankfully
After a few months of being back on #pipewire again, I have updated a couple of things in my article from way back when I first made the (abortive) attempt to transition from jack/pulseaudio...
Linux Distro
This is definitely not a Shitpost. Pick a Linux distro and advertise it for me....
