I actually got this #SixOnSaturday readyin time, but by then it was late and since it had been a work day, no more oomph to post ( I take text and alt text seriously, no quick matter! lol)

Views from before the recent snow (several days last week + snow all day yesterday, not extreme amounts, but back roads are pretty messy, so extra day off to avoid the driving). #sun #mountains #lichen #fungi #WinterPictures #Alberta #SundayPix

a piece of mostly rotted birch log, the bark still intact, lies in granular half-melted, refrozen snow. A large patch of blue-green-grey lichen is on top of the bark, from one side (upper side in photo) a colony of fungi emerges, rather flat bodies, irregular slightly clam shell shaped with layers/bands of lighter/darker colour and varying texture, all muted by a light coating of green algae.
View across a snow covered road allowance and across a wire and post fence to a pasture with many tracks and trails from cattle, some paths worn/melted away so a bit of dry grass is showing through. Midway into the scene, a patch of dark spruce rises to one side and a bit farther a series of upright dark board wind fences cross the frame. Beyond- more snowy fields and distant blue mountains. It is an hour or so from sunset, and the sun is huge white glow through thin clouds in the upper right, with light clouds farther out tinting to gold and blue grey, a bit darker on both colours above the mountains.

In the woods on the farm today where I was harvesting deadwood for firewood. Light all day and around -22 at that time. Luckily inside this wood, no wind (outside, another story, slight, but still deadly).
has been getting us caught up, bit by bit-- still less than usual, overall.

It won't surprise anyone that I'm late for #ArtAdventCalendar 😆 I had an unexpected day off work yesterday (back at it today!) so got some editing done. With the theme, I've edited a touch more than usual. I'm aiming to use a photo from each day as that day's image (no photos Dec 3, so doubled on the 4th!). Day 2 Winter sun across a couple of straw stubble fields separated by wire and post fences, the second one bordered by a thin line of variable height native poplars at the back. Sky is mostly blue with dark clouds approaching from left. White vignetting
Day 3 in the woods on farm, looking out between the dark ridged trunks of several balsam poplars, ground lightly covered with snow, dry leaves showing through. Beyond wetland with clumps of dried grass poking through snow, then an area of low red willows the sun hitting their tops and the mixed woods behind against a blue-grey sky. White vignetting
Several wiry spidery dry stems of Sea Thrift, most with dry seed heads, all reaching to the left across shadowed snow in afternoon gloom, Behind the central stems is a cinnabar coloured apple leaf stuck between stems and snow. Black vignetting.

An uneven lumpy bumpy rolling spread of green moss over old logs and stumps, surrounded with reddish brown and grey fallen leaves giving way to snow farther away, punctuated with numerous thin stems of saplings and shrubs, larger tree bases visible farther back. Black vignetting.

Cut a bit of firewood today (involved a little wandering with camera time), and cooked a birthday meal for my friend ( a)curry red lentils with tofu b)mashed potatoes c)mildly chile spiced broccoli with black beans, lots of caramelised onion and yellow pepper involved in a and c!

Low afternoon sun shines through a single gold to red-brown apple leaf, which dangles from the tip of an upright stem curving up and leftward into the centre of the image from lower right. Below the leaf tip, some snow and ice crystals are stuck to the twig. Background is a blurred row of tree trunks a little way back, trunks are silhouetted near black, separated by rows of overlapping light circles from near white to gold and blue- artifacts of the camera lens processing the dappled woodland light. The effect is like abstract stained glass, and a wider gap between the trunks frames the leaf like a gem on display. Black vignetting.

Days 8 a shot from the car of a dense stand of Tamarack ? Larix laricina and spruce and 9 pre across the neighbours' with and

Early dusk, partly overcast, looking across a pasture covered lightly in snow, occasional clumps of grass and thistles sticking out. To the left of centre, a group of cattle, black or black with white faces and bellies are standing next to or feeding from a couple of metal feeders that hold round hay bales. Farther back is an area of dense lowish (taller than the cows, lower than other trees!) willows, reddish dark with uneven frost/snow coating. Farther yet another snowy pasture stretches into the distance, with just the tops of distant trees showing behind it, on lower land. Mountains run along the horizon, blue foothills with uneven rugged higher mountains behind, blue with white snow caps against a barely pink sky with some scattered light grey clouds just above the peaks and a few darker blue-grey higher up. White vignetting.

Day10 a mostly sunny morning East of a chilly morning, low -15C (not cold for this time of year, about average, we've been mostly above) would have been a few degrees higher at least on the way to work, hit a high just above freezing.

View of the base of a large balsam poplar trunk with dark furrowed bark, nearly smooth snow immediately around it, dry leaves and twigs showing through the shallow snow farther away. It is in mature mixed woods-- a shady place but with trees not too close together, and not a lot of growth on the ground in many places. A couple of shafts of weak, golden, afternoon sun shine in from mid left, just reaching the trunk and the snow around it.

Cool and a glow all afternoon, as we often have in mid-winter. Still mostly above average temps, and moderate snowfall, though we got a few more sticky inches last night (our normal at this time of year should be dry! 'warmer' winters are not all positive)

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 14 Since reading more about her by chance, recently, I've been thinking a bit about the #Baltic #Latvian #goddess #Ragana She seems more to stem from the primordial nature worship of Old Europe (the ancient pre-Indo-Europeans). (more to come on this some day soon). She's associated with birch trees in particular, so now I think of her whenever I see them! Next year's catkins on this one, I think? #pagan #BorealForest #CommuneWithNature #WinterPictures #Alberta

Day 17 that was Sunday, so, a work day and so the pic is from the moving car on the I was talking a little to @richardgrant a while back when an earlier photo in this thread showed some Tamarack / Larix laricina ( I had a question mark on the id then, just because with snow/frost/ice covering the trees, it was hard to see what trees were there). This view shows Tamaracks again--continued:

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 19 this was taken a couple of days before the Solstice, but the #sun #WinterLight is a major focus for many weeks over winter (okay, maybe I'm always obsessed with light-not so much pure blinding sun, but the effects as she lowers, peeks out through trees and clouds, etc!). Here it was mid afternoon, just a couple of hours from sunset, a little below freezing (well above average!) with sun and sun dog! #WinterPictures #Alberta #CountryLiving #SunDog #snow #December

Day 20 The provides much less warmth in winter, but provides many great photo opps, being lower in the sky/ easier to combine with other elements! In general, here is not our stormy season- summer skies are much more dramatic, but we can still get some good clouds at times! To get these unobstructed southwest views, I have to trudge over to the neighbours' fence (trees, saplings, fences in the way before that!)
