Telegram has always been shady. I don’t use their platform because I don’t trust them. Same as a lot of people. Now they’re showing who they are by harboring a transphobic far-right extremist from Brazil, Nikolas Ferreira.
Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered Telegram to suspend his account because his followers are using the platform to plan violence and destruction. They refused.

Did... did #Telegram just pull a Discord by trying to make me gift a Premium subscription to one of my contacts?
A gift icon came up in the message bar, which made a window appear when clicking on it, but I dismissed it too fast to notice what was written on it and now it's gone...
I'm a little late to this, but I feel the need to mention it because I feel like these people are just going to move to Telegram, if they already haven't.
Telegram is NOT a better alternative to Discord. It asks for your phone number (huge red flag), lies about being end-to-end encrypted (encryption is done server-side), is centralized, and not entirely FOSS (server-side software is closed source). Look into decentralized/self-hosted solutions instead.
I personally recommend hosting an XMPP server. Install an XMPP server stack that supports multi-user-chats and host your discussions there. With XMPP, you can sign up for an account on any server and talk to anyone, including people from other servers. There are even modernized web-clients like Movim which make it more user friendly.
For private/direct messages, you can also end-to-end encrypt them using OMEMO. Just don't use them for public MUCs or you will end up having problems. You really don't need to encrypt a public chat anyway.

So, I've been arguing with myself over whether I should resurrect my #Telegram account or not. From various sources, I get the impression that their platform isn't all that secure despite their claims. If memory serves, one of the sources said they wouldn't trust it with anything more than a casual conversation, and definitely wouldn't trust it with more sensitive topics. I'm not interested in using #Meta services, so things like #Messenger & #WhatsApp are not options I'd consider. At this point, my messaging options are #Signal and #Matrix even though the latter isn't the most #accessible option. Heck, when you get down to it, the former has a few accessibility annoyances on #Android which is the mobile platform I use. Decisions, decisions...
