Spent this morning researching & I will need to do more research, but it's a good start.

It's time for another new keyboard, the last one I bought was just before I quit twitter for Mastodon and that was a membrane.

Since I've been writing full time, I've gone through 5 cheapo keyboards, and it's always because one key fails (heavy finger strike maybe), so time to go back to mechanical. At least then when a key fails, I can replace the failed switch.

We have returned from spending Thanksgiving week on the Oregon coast with family. Good times! My Father-in-Law, who has been a ham since probably before I was born, is downsizing and gave me a pile of goodies to bring home and use. More things to learn! I now have my own oscilloscope, which (as a proper nerd) I've always wanted...

A scope with a handle no less! Now you can take it on outings, like to the beach, or on long hikes!

So the direction the switches are shown in the instructions is wrong. The pins have to be at the top, not the bottom (that’s where the holes are in the PCB). Double-checked it just to be sure I hadn’t done something odd.

Tip: you can plug the PCB into your computer and check each switch works as you plug it in :)

(Careful you don’t bend the pins when placing the switches. Make sure they go straight into the holes.)

Success! All switches in and working :)

The flow I eventually fell into was to place a switch in lightly and press it to test it made contact (by seeing the key appear in the text editor) then press it in without worrying whether I got the pins in right.

I haven’t gotten to the Lego case yet but this is currently a fully-functional keyboard. (Albeit not the most comfortable to write on.)

Time for some dinner, me thinks. Will continue later :)

Hope all my bunpals had a good weekend. Will it work if I try and ignore Monday by turning my bank on it?

cazabon,

@Leobunny05

I get that the has on each ; it's different, but the reason behind it makes sense.

But what's the last switch there? It looks like you put in a light switch at bunny-level! Very considerate of you.

@golem :blobcatgooglynotlikethis: PCIe 7.0 is 4 times faster than PCIe 5.0...
The only reason why it needs to be that fast, are actually nvme's...
How about creating a dedicated bus or still having multiple lanes for older versions, i acutally would prefer having more PCIe lanes and they also dont need to be faster than PCIe 4

@whitekiba @Jain @golem I've yet to see it's connector cuz nowhere was I able to find it...

With PCIe 4.0 that was sadly omnitted from the spec.

And yes there are valid reasons for it:
Like industrial #SBC-based systems which may even utilize passive #PCIe #backplanes that do #Bifurcation per #Chipset, omnitting the need for expensive PCIe #switches.
Kinda like the passive PCIe x16 => 4x NVMe (PCIe x4) cards.

So one would be able to add more stuff onto the backplane...

All done! Now I am waiting on the new keycap set to come in and tie in the orange coloring better.

Shout out to @petejohanson for giving me some layout inspiration 🙌

Well, it looks like I am getting into the weeds…. I just ordered me some new spings and lube to modify some of my switches… I told myself I wouldn’t get too deep

I just swapped the springs on Akko Sponge #keyboard #switches. I replaced the original 40gf springs with 58gf two-stage springs, lubed with 105g0. These are now my second favorite #mechanicalkeyboard switches, right behind Kaihl Box Jades.

Here's an audio test if you are interested in listening / comparing:

I wrote an article on my perspective on the new Zeal PC Clickiez #switches for #mechanicalkeyboard 's. They rae really something completely different.
