Thank you. I would consider switching from #ObsidianMD to #StandardNotes for reasons of #privacy and #DataSecurity, and because Standard Notes and Proton software is #OpenSource. Proton being hosted in Switzerland, in Europe, helps too, although I don't know what that means for Standard Notes, whose servers are currently in the U.S.
However, I was hoping to learn about the cost of switching.
@itsfoss I've been using #OpenToDoList syncing to my work's #owncloud server via WebDAV, and it does the job reasonably well. But looking at #StandardNotes, this seems closer to the Google Keep replacement that I wanted. Especially if it will be integrated in an already existing personal #Proton account. And hopefully syncing shared notes/to-do lists to other Proton accounts.
It looks like StandardNotes is joining forces with Proton.
"Our intention has always been to build a small, sustainable organization that helps protect your right to keep personal information private and preserve your freedom to think, speak, and act. Joining with Proton—one of the rare organizations that can (and is willing) to take a long-term approach—gives us the best opportunity to achieve this ambition."
Proton and Standard Notes are joining forces! We’re excited that #StandardNotes will be joining the Proton family to bring end-to-end encrypted note-taking to Proton users.
I wanna share:
I had so many damn struggles with the #StandardNotes app with the login in the past days. I had to write to Help/Support and someone so gentle helped me.
I got my account back and now my world goes on peacefully. #peace#Apps
After the recent announcement that #StandardNotes will no longer be open-source going forward, I felt like this was a good time to try out other options, so I just made a #Notesnook account.
The questions I want answered for any cloud-based password manager:
· Is its encryption approach sane?
· Does the server have access to any plaintext data?
· Can the server manipulate the data?
· Are users being aided in creating safe credentials?
· Do encryption keys or their components ever leave user’s computer?
· Are there encryption backdoors meant to aid account recovery for example?
· Is the client-side software safe from web-based attacks?
· Are there precautions in place to avoid filling in passwords on the wrong websites?
· Are there precautions in place to avoid filling in passwords on compromised websites without user’s knowledge?
· …
The questions media coverage tends to focus on:
· Are there plain text passwords in memory that someone with administrator privileges on user’s machine could read out?
@WPalant I would have thought #Firefox ticked all those boxes, thought it can be a pain for non web passwords. I use a separate encrypted notes app #StandardNotes for non-web myself (which also ticks most of the boxes — I trust).
Somewhat inspired by @theprivacydad's most recent blog post, here's a list of privacy-friendly software that "just works" about as well as (if not better than) more invasive alternatives, even for the relatively non-tech savvy:
My tip for a personal note taking app is https://standardnotes.com/
Opensource, very good security, externally audited, works on all your devices. However no collaboration but that's because of the security. #StandardNotes#Security#Opensource
I like the #proton products but I advise to separate your data.
So I use @protonmail but store my passwords in @bitwarden and my 2nd factor in #standardnotes (when not using my @nitrokey ) to not give an attacker the chance to get all information from one service.
I love learning new things and meeting new people. I get too busy sometimes digging the internet for a thing I want to learn about. I can go from ‘Hello Fresh vs. Marley Spoon’ and then 5 hours later I ended up with a new desire to eat keto! Or I can look up ‘media training for tech startups’ and then ended my day with a programming course enrolled…
You cannot imagine what brought me to Mastodon but hey this looks fun.
@danarel I subscribe to #StandardNotes in their early bird plan and found it more reliable, though lacking good inline photo attachments. Their new pricing now though is too much for what's on offer so looking for FOSS alternative.
