DR = remap(1, -1, 0, 1, dot(shield_north, projectile_vector))
...or...
DR = smoothstep(1, -1, dot(shield_north, projectile_vector))
Let's see which way to calculate [D]amage [R]eduction is better, probably the first, but the 2nd one will make raking stern-to-bow awesome, everything else ~50%ish, and hitting shields head-on ("north" is forward, apart from ships with multiple shield grids) practically 0% Damage / 100% DR.

Watching the Sarah Conner Chronicles at the moment because I love time travel sci-fi and the "fight against big tech" feels very pertinent.
While I have been enjoying the moral quandaries the characters have been forced to reckon with, the constant reinforcement of the Great Man Theory is hella frustrating.
Am only on Episode 4 so far, so I'm yet to see if this will be too much of an issue for me to keep watching it.
As far as I can remember, the best that the Terminator film series managed to achieve, when attempting to move beyond the Great Man Theory deceit embedded in the franchise, was to shift it over to "Great Woman Theory" instead.
I think that one of the reasons I am finding this especially frustrating is a result of reading @annaleen 's The Future of Another Timeline which was so good at confronting and challenging the Great Man Theory.
Oh goodness, one of my favorite genres! I love "The Years of Rice and Salt" by Kim Stanley Robinson. The story looks at a world where Europe is destroyed by the Black Death. What makes it so fascinating is that Robinson shows how world history would have unfolded in roughly the same fashion with some new locations or focuses. For example, a Renaissance takes place in Samarkand and many cities in our North America are in the same place.
Part of the SF Masterworks Collection. Despite being nearly 60 years old the narrative around the manipulation of the truth feels incredibly prescient. Wondering whether David Whitaker had read it before he came up with #DoctorWho story The Enemy of the World. #Books#Bookstodon#SciFi#PhilipKDick
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams
It’s some years since I last read this and while I remembered it fondly I think it’s even better than I was expecting. A clever, interesting story with all the usual wit of Adams and genuinely laugh out loud funny, which I don’t say often about novels. It’s very good.
Filming was expected to begin today but postponed due to the ongoing strikes. Consequently 150 members of the crew have been layed off. Director Joachim Rønning has some thoughts to share of his disappointment
Zack Snyder's "Rebel Moon" film is gonna get a trailer at Gamescom next week on Tuesday (8/22)! I just found out/remembered about the movie today actually and I can't wait. Looks epic and a cool new original sci-fi world and story. This is a story he had actually pitched to Lucasfilm and they rejected it heh heh...
Next up is Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes, a space ghost story involving a lost ship, a repair vessel and (I’m guessing) bad decisions in deep space. Seems like a good vacation read. #SummerReading#Books#Scifi#horror
