It is uncanny how #SchildiChat for #Matrix is more streamlined than #Element on all platforms: web, desktop ones, Android. Such a nice fork!
It's got no issue with editing replies on mobile. SchildiChat is packed with quality-of-life features, such as bubbles, opening to first unread message and sending read receipts as you scroll down, sliding between spaces, custom room emojis (upload via #Cinny and use in SC!). Labs are immediately available, pinned messages are on by default.
You usually had to compromise by using less stable #ElementNightly to get hands on Labs, but that's not the spirit of development I was looking for in my day-to-day messaging app, so I'm glad Schildi's got it right.
If that's not convincing enough, their mascot is a turtle with a post horn. https://schildi.chat 🐢📯
Is there not a functional #android app for #matrix that does not completely suck? #Element hangs a lot before it updates chats at all, same for #SchildiChat but not as long and not as frequent. #FluffyChat is over simplified and doesn't seem to have a way to have unread chats be on top, nor is there any jump to last read spot. Other clients don't have spaces, so they are already eliminated. Is there no other option? #matrixchat
✅ Browse by subreddit. Click "Subreddits" right of the "Communities" header to change views back and forth. Filtering is persisted when you change views. The view you select is persisted between browsing sessions.
✅ Initial version of Subreddit pages. Visit sub.rehab/r/<subreddit-name> to view links for a specific subreddit. For example: https://sub.rehab/r/selfhosted. Note: <subreddit-name> has to be all lowercase.
@subrehab I'm using #Schildichat as a #Matrix client, and when I clicked on your provided link to the "official" Matrix forum for #selfhosted, it guided me in a totally straightforward way, right into the Matrix chat room (in Schildichat).
I know this shouldn't be all that miraculous a thing in 2023, but when I see that kind of smooth convenience working in the #OpenSource world, I have enough experience to stop and say, "umm, wait, that was awesome, and deserves appreciation". 👌
afaik some people (including me) have problems with apps like Steam and SchildiChat blocking their screensavers while running, even when they're not doing anything on these apps.
Well, for people who use Flatpak versions of these screensaver-perm-abusing kind of apps, I now know of a workaround:
If not already done, install Flatseal (com.github.tchx84.Flatseal), open Flatseal -> [Name of the app], scroll to "Session bus" and remove the entry "org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver", which should completely take away their screensaver perms. Then also restart the app if it's currently running.
Perhaps this could be a double-edged sword in some other areas as well (apparently in e.g. Steam's case it's there for controllers from what I've read(?)), but for me personally it's a worthy sacrifice
I took a look at #Matrix (with the #Schildichat client), wondering if I could use my own chat room there instead of a Mattermost server, that I use for #Dhamma Talk questions and feedback in my Dhamma Talk livestream videos: https://bhikkhu.ca/video_dhamma_talks/
While Schildichat was very Discord-esque, my sense was that it's still overly fiddly; I wouldn't suggest it to anyone except a geek.
Matrix definitely blew away IRC, & I think all #OpenSource geeks worth their salt should eschew #Discord for Matrix.
Just got banned from the @GrapheneOS Matrix chatrooms for, squints, siding with Rossmann and/or posting the video when someone asked what he said.
They are such piece-of-shit jannies that try to squash any and all criticism.
BTW, does anyone have any recommendations for a #Matrix client other than #SchildiChat that actually gives you a message when you are banned (or blocked) instead of making the chat just disappear leaving you baffled as to wtf happened?
Is that even possible?
@vordenken I self-host #Synapse with #Signal, #Telegram, and #Facebook bridges. One of the best things on my little server, deployed via docker following the official documentation. Runs rock solid and there are so many clients to choose from (currently using #Element on the phone, #Thunderbird, #Schildichat and #Emacs ement.el on the pc).
