Coming up on one year of existence it is wild to think about the numerous collaborations and relationships that have emerged in the fedi as a whole but also a fair few via RFF discovery and connections.
We've had the honour to play new works that exist now because of such connections.
Collaborative works, remixes, production, mastering, video, web and streaming, writing, voice work and so much more we can't possibly see it all and don't have to. It's rad is exists.
And the evergreen reminder if you have a moment and a nice thought about something you've heard, do drop a note to the artist. It's something we can all do.
Even standalone it is rocket fuel for the creative spirit and voice. Collectively it is amazing.
We aren't always in a position to offer material support yet we still have mighty power to make connections, build community, and keep creative fires burning.
Donate (and/or volunteer and/or share) today to make sure a kitten like #RubiaTheCat can continue chilling to @radiofreefedi's Comfy channel tomorrow and in the future!
#RadioFreeFedi is fucking great.
If you want to make sure that you are always up to date with news from the station, you can turn on notifications for their posts. That's what I did and thanks to that I never miss it when new music is added or events are announced.
RFF could also use some volunteers, as well as donations. It also need some help with outreach- can you make a post about RFF that would let it reach more corners of the fediverse and beyond?
Tell a friend to drop-in and listen and discover amazing independent fedi artists! Helping RFF reach new listeners is in turn helping our entire artist community. Massive impact from some simple sharing.
Submit your original music! Or, tell an artist friend to get in on the party and submit music. In most cases it’s as easy as a single DM.
Follow links affiliated with the tracks we play via now playing, the playlist bot, the playlist csv text files or the artist directory to: -Drop a kind word to an artist who’s work you’ve enjoyed -Tag us too, or #radioFreeFedi, it’s hugely rewarding to see amazing and kind interactions -Be an impromptu street team for an artist you’ve enjoyed hearing to help them reach new corners of the fedi -Consider the best ways you might amiable to for materially supporting artists if you have the means
Check out the schedule and setup a date with a specialty block of themed tunes to discover even more tunes and artists. Since know what you are signing up for, Specialty block selections can go a bit longer and wilder and feature tracks you will not hear on the Main and Comfy channels.
Want to perform live, busk, have a panel interview or discussion, host a listening party or album launch on our Specialty channel and/or video streaming channel? Can you offer some time to moderate chat in the video channel for a hangout? OR, does anyone out there want to record artist interviews? We could happily help recommend some willing and friendly artists. Or would you like to provide production help with any such events? There is space for just about anyone willing to be an active contributor.
Can you help to collate and assemble lists of things such as upcoming release dates from fedi artists? Write some friendly mini reviews of RFF artists we can post as RFF?
Can you provide about 5 minutes of voice read per month for a regular show that RFF will write edit and produce? We just need a regular presenter willing to record the intros and bridges. From a script verbatim if that helps.
Have some original longer form spoken word or other programming you can consent or is fully consented for us to broadcast on the Specialty channel?
You don’t have to be a musician to contribute material. Send in some things for theNews or theTraffic. Send in some fun station IDs. If you’d like to do a read, we have scripts and guidelines available if that helps. All good fedizens are welcome to join the party. DM @radiofreefedi for more info.
Other duties as required. If you have some regular time to offer, we can probably line you up with a helpful task! Or if you have an idea for any original or consented programming you might like to make for RFF please do pitch it. If you can help with how we might be more sustainable as a community service without burning out a volunteer, we are all ears. Local grants are tough because of our global reach and scope. Prominent global grants lean real heavy to dev of tech that will get thrown away in 12-18 months and less for community building. Corporate money is a non starter. Pledge driving to staff the place feels weird personally as it was never the intention of the experiment, but here we are, it’s not really an experiment anymore, and as a means to help and promote more indie artists it may be OK to the community? Any help here would be amazing.
Join us on a public RFF chat for general comradery off the mciroblog format, offers of time or help, feedback. Artists please ask for an invite to our artist and contributor group so that we can discuss station initiatives and how we might further help promote each other. #radioFreeFedi:matrix.org

As linked below, the title track is on YouTube. We've also got a few other choice tracks that we are finalizing for the 2 Feb official release, including a fantastic one from @mykie.
@screwtape will be playing a few tracks tonight on their show (I'll try to be there) and @jessica will do a related charity livestream next week.
Post holidays, the RFF new release feaure on Main channel has returned.
"Hurry Up & Wait" by Wonder Truly
The unrequited doom of modern relations/comms/tech never sounded so delightful.
A visciously catchy electro pop story jam from @WonderTruly
Engaging vocal harmonies and pauses will have you nodding and tapping all the things. We hope to add some more Wonder Truly tracks soon. Gauranteed bops!
Ahoy friends. The keenly observant may have noticed a recent edit in the bio.
We send every track played with artist support info to a #nowplaying bot. That server however throttles public posts, making our sorting and searching hashtag inclusions on such posts mostly null and void.
It is still live while we test the new solution as linked in bio @rff
Hashtags, use case ideas (hushed List) and other RFF list tools are outlined here:
In thinking how to connect the streaming community and some holiday #joinIn we assembled the fedi's distributed New Years Day 24 Stream Parade. #NYD24Parade
Here is our debrief with community feedback from the event. Happy to see such comradery and sparks to get involved with self and community powered broadcasting.
Reminder, coming up at 1900 UTC | 1100 US PST, on RFF video channel we're having a world premiere watch party for the new video from Blue Nagoon "Garden". #joinIn
Join RFF and Blue Nagoon @bluenagoon for a world premiere watch party of their new music video for "Garden" featuring Alyssa Fischer.
We'll spin some Blue Nagoon tunes and videos, premiere the new one ~15 past the hour and the artist will be in chat for any questions and generally festive vibes ya'll usually bring.
And reminder that you too can use our community platforms for audio, video, simulcast, and more. Reach out if you have original programming, event or independent artist promoting ideas.
TLDR We can't burn the human power as we did in '23. We're requesting a "staff" donation goal in the hopes the community will back RFF going all in for '24. If not we'll scale back offerings and initiatives.
Either way we still need more help from the community for station direction and community building and outreach out in the feeds.
Not sure how improve reach or better convey the victim of success RFF is. I don't want to feel trapped to a diminished community service cheapening ethos nor want anyone else to feel obligated.
I've outlined a brutally modest, voluntarily exploitative plan that will allow RFF to sustain for 2024 and coordinated community involvement willing, grow how we can amplify independent creative voices together.
Can you help us reach new corners of the verse or rekindle old connections?
The #radioFreeFedi community of artists, listeners and patrons has shown amazing support in all directions, materially, in kind words and uplifting aid and support in a collaborative spirit.
We know it can be tough promoting your art and we love to help.
Has it been a while since you've submitted? Have you been meaning to? Did you not know our community powered service exists? See our bio for the TLDR of what we do.
Every day is a great day to grow the soundtrack for an awesome community instigating intentional acts of kindness, comradery, and direct support.
Every day is also a great day to support an indie artist.
Radio Free Fedi is a great community, fediverse based radio station, and it needs help! (musician.social)
