Breaking the phone you plan to demo with is always fun.

Fixing it, even more so!
Just need a keyboard and run 1 command.

2 hours to go https://debconf23.debconf.org/talks/61-the-year-of-linux-on-desktopwmobile/

I'm a bit concerned about the frequent power losses at the hotel though :D

I'll add image descriptions later, need to work on my slides :P
and need to go for a swim!

I gave KDE Plasma Mobile another go. It improved a LOT over the past few months. No crashes yet! It's a lot more stable now. Although not as stable as Phosh.

I like their whole "just copy Android" philosophy. Everything feels familiar and intuitive. I might keep it like this.

Today was cell broadcast test day in NL. @janvlug and @z3ntu thankfully captured Modemmanager logs. Piped that into my MM testcase and could parse it out all right:

> NL-Alert 04-12-2023 12:00: TESTBERICHT. De overheid waarschuwt je tijdens noodsituaties via NL-Alert. Je leest dan wat je moet doen en waar je meer informatie kan vinden. *** TEST MESSAGE Netherlands Government Public Warning System. No action required.

Next up message assembly and exposing it on DBus.

Well, I tried and failed for the second time and once again have no clue how to get #KDE / #QT apps to use a dark theme in #Phosh . I even tried switching theme and color pallet over qt5ct, qt6ct and kvantum but the mobile versions don't seem to react to those apps whatsoever or I did something really wrong (yet I set the env variable correctly). I wish something like PostmarketOS Tweaks had it, as far as I know it's just a different call because there is no proper standard for dark mode yet.

phosh 0.32.0 is out 🚀📱:

More fixes in and ➕ allows to reorder lock screen plugins (thanks gauthamx@mastodon.world) ➕ improvements in phosh-osk-stub's virtual-keyboard mode in non US layouts (e.g. for electron apps) and initial support for Malayalam.

Day 4 of attempting to daily drive postmarketOS Linux on a OnePlus 6T:

📶 I felt brave this morning, so I handed over my SIM card to Linux. At first, the phone didn't recognise the card, but the wiki page helped me resolve the problem quickly. I had to increase the config value sim_wait_time and reboot the phone to make it work. Mobile data and receiving texts work flawlessly. I haven't tried sending texts and making calls yet.

⏰ Yesterday, I also used the Clock app to set an alarm to wake up and a timer when cooking, and it actually worked fine, even with the phone locked.

🚈 I also had my train ticket checked today. I was able to present the QR code without any issues.

So, I might need to abandon for now because the maintainer is a very special person… https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/Phosh/phosh/-/issues/964#note_2079241

If you are not happy with your on-screen-keyboard (#squeekboard) on Mobian, you might want to try out #phosh-osk-stub which is @agx's toy keyboard. I like the layout a lot, apparently it even features local text prediction (have not tried that yet).
Remember, it is a toy, so hold back on your support requests.

Installation TL;DR: apt install phosh-osk-stub && update-alternatives --config Phosh-OSK

P.S. The screenshot is using PureOS rather than Mobian, but it is available there just as well

Last week parts of the #MobileLinux community got together at #FrOSCon and, dare I say, had a great time in our "FOSS on Mobile" devroom 🌈

Throughout two days we had some hacking, lightning talks, workshops and BoFs!

Saturday morning I had the pleasure of welcoming around 5 people (at 10:00 in the morning!)
to the room.

People had different theories why phosh-osk-stub woudn't use the whole display width on wider displays so I was buckling up for a full afternoon of debugging sizing issues but as it turns out after a couple of minutes we were just missing a tightening-threshold in a HdyClamp: Rest of the afternoon saved thanks to inspector 🎉

I think I finally figured out a decent dark theme for apps in using and it's dark Gnome theme but Tokodon doesn't seem to like it at all so I will have to use a PWA for Mastodon again. It's really nice to finally have a somewhat decent dark theme even tho I would prefer the dark version of Breeze, maybe KDE will make that possible at some point I guess!

Progress in supporting Indic languages in phosh-osk-stub:

  • merged initial completer support for Indic languages based on libvarnam earlier this week
  • have an MR to switch from libvarnam to more modern govarnam (thx @subins2000
  • @arunmani is looking into making all the possible completions available
  • have an MR to allow to switch between different completion engines automatically (e.g. use for Us & De and for (see video below)

With some preparatory work to allow plugins to use objects from #phosh core and @arunmani 's nice work on custom quick settings already merged the often asked for caffeine toggle is within reach:

#gtk #gnome #LinuxMobile

The caffeine toggle in Phosh's quick setting allows to prevent the session from going idle. The video demos this using "watch gnome-session-inhibit -l"

Looking forward tomorrow 3 days hackfest organized by @tbernard

The main topic is GNOME mobile, but I expect there will be lots of collateral topics such as camera, hardware enablement, adaptive apps, UX, platform APIs, interoperability, and coordination.

We'll have people from @gnome @purism #systemd @mntmn @postmarketOS @FlatpakApps #Flathub #Phosh #freedesktop

I will be moderating and support where I can. Hopefully get some work done too.

He look, 🎅 just dropped 0.34.0 🚀 📱 . The bulk of things happened on the Wayland compositor side but the phone shell and other bits also got some improvements and fixes.

Check the detailed release notes at https://phosh.mobi/releases/rel-0.34.0/

Some progress to handle notches / cutouts of phones better in : I have a small lib that gets panel cutout / notch information as paths and can calculate a bounding box . can use it to render cutouts for debugging and can use it for layout (so far only to shift the panel down). (see follow up posts for more pictures).

Gestern habe ich mir #Mobian @mobian mit #Phosh auf mein #Pinephone pro installiert.
Was soll ich sagen? ...

Kamera, GPS, Rotation, Telefon, SMS, WiFi, Mobile Daten, Karten, ...

I forgot to post it but for those of you who (like me) desperately wait for push notifications on your #LinuxPhone there is a issue for #Phosh now, it's just to collect ideas and they don't plan to actually implement anything till suspend is figured out (that currently only works for calls and SMS) but it's a start! Big thanks to @agx for the nice conversation we had in their Matrix room! :)

With a bit of help from the next phosh-osk-stub release can (optionally) hide when a keyboard gets attached.

Phosh's on screen keyboard hiding itself when a keyboard gets attached to the phone.

I remember how nervous I was when (in early 2020) I went to the post office with my 📱 to drop off a 📦 and present the barcode on the phone. (Having previously scp'ed the pdf to the phone to show it in evince).

Would the 🔋 last? Would it overheat? Would the display stack hold? It worked.

Nowadays I don't spend a thought: Fill in the data on my laptop, save the pdf, have it synced automatically via to 's ticket-box folder and show it at the counter. ✅
