WIP #paleoart of adult Dilophosaurus racing across a Kayenta salt flat to cannibalise a younger conspecific. One of the last @PalaeoGames images I'm working on (46 in total, 4 to go, including this one).
One of the best thing that happened in dinosaur paleontology is discovering the rest of the body of the used-to-be mysterious Deinocheirus. Until then only the giant arms were known.
Giant camel duck is something nobody expected and I love that.
January: Microraptor and the Flowers. I started this year out making paleoart watercolours and never really stopped. This one is about a Microraptor investigating the first flowers she’s ever seen. The flowers are Lingyuananthus, a lovely little fossil flower described in an even lovelier paper that was not behind a paywall for once.
Here's a challenge for #paleo#artists
I want to see an extinct animal in a non dramatic scenario, preferably at night, just doing its thing. Is it yawning as it lays down? It it just wandering aimlessly? 99% of an animals life is boring mundane stuff, but we almost never see that in #paleoart.
I would love to see what you come up with.
New #paleoart at #Patreon! Here's an image that I'm sure won't cause any upset at all among tyrannosaur fans: giant azhdarchid pterosaurs drive T. rex away from a juvenile Triceratops carcass. High-res version, WIPs and discussion here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/103222863#sciart#dinosaurs
Today's random portfolio artwork is "Wrong Place Wrong Time," which shows the moment of death for one of two Sauroposeidon. This was my first ever Zbrush sculpture illustration (2012).
I have a new post over on my #Patreon about the diversity of #bennettitalean leaves!!! I'm not particularly good at shameless self promotion, but if you like #paleobotany and #paleoart this is the kind of thing you can look forward to me posting over there! #paleontology
been thinking about doing a drawing of owl tyrannosaurs. is that as stupid as is sounds, or is it at least possible for t. rec or any other large theropod to possess facial discs of that sort? #dinosaurs#paleoart#paleontology
Working on #paleoart of a rearing Kentrosaurus for the Palaeogames book today. It's not doing any favours to dissuade my opinion that Godzilla is best interpreted as a gigantic, bipedal, carnivorous stegosaur - official canonical backstory be damned!
@john, over in the Historic Palaeoart group on FB, Richard Hing thought this would be of interest: this is Hans Emmenegger's "Jurassic Period" from (1895). According to Richard, Emmenegger was one of the most important Swiss artists of his generation, making him a rare example of a fine artist getting into #paleoart.
And that's all for tonight! This, and the rest of the diagrams I'm doing, are probably needlessly detailed, considering they're just to produce figures, but I'd like them to look at least semi-realistic when done, so I'm going all out with the textures! #paleobotany#paleoart
In 2004 I played with a book idea but never took it to a publisher. I did 100 draft drawings for the proposal (never completed), I'll post a few more throughout today. First is Archelon.
Another birdie for #FossilFriday . This time, #Cratoavis cearensis, landing on the fertile stems of a Welwitschiostrobus murili plant, with Welwitschiophyllum brasiliense leaves in the background. This was a tiny bird, less than 15cm long, including its tail streamers. #paleobotany#paleoart#plants
Into the year 2001. My old landlady commissioned me to paint some sharks, so I chose two Squalicorax and a Cretoxyrhina eating a juvenile Tylosaurus. I later chose to Photoshop the mother tylosaur into the composition.
In 2003 I decided that if I was daft enough to limit myself to palaeoart, I should be able to supply clients with 2 and 3D reconstructions. I started with Diplodocus (London NHM), but I never finished it.
I illustrated several books in 2004 (via the Beehive Illustration Agency). One of them was PLANET DINOSAUR, by Steve Parker and Miles Kelly Publishing. I will post the five main paintings (acrylic on card) throughout today. Third is the Late Jurassic.
