My current workflow includes using a #windows Virtual Machine for the sole purpose of running #Microsoft Office and #OneDrive , and this clunky solution is still leagues better than actually running Windows on nearly every measure.
The pain the limited time I spend in that wee VM window underscores how bad Windows has gotten over the years.
#psa Okay, learned a lesson today. I either missed this or the setting changed in an update. Both #OneDrive and #Dropbox have a setting for keeping all the files in the cloud rather than on your Mac, downloading them as you need them. This means that if you need them and the service is responding poorly, or you have no connectivity, you can't get to your files. If you use #scrivener, for example, which syncs through dropbox, this can cause sync errors between devices!
Both services appear to set all files online only. Both services have a way to change this to ensure all files are downloaded for offline use.
#Writers, #authors, as well as #artists, I strongly suggest you keep your files on disk as well as in the cloud. Change these settings now!
Calling on #linuxmint#linux people who can help with dual boot situation and OneDrive syncing on Windows. Trying from LM to access my Windows documents folder. I can see the folder, called OneDrive in the terminal, but it's colored in red. Which I assume means I can't get to it. And when I try to cd to that directory, I get an error saying that it doesn't exist. I know that is the path as it appears in Windows. I'm getting closer! Thanks for any suggestions.
@mforester Thanks for the reply. I don't think I can pull down OneDrive files on demand from LM. Though strangely enough, I can get to Google Sync folders and files. I think there's some funkiness in how OneDrive "manages" the syncing. #onedrive
Pushing products on people that do not want them is not a good thing.
Luckily the EU has made it possible to remove Edge and Onedrive. I hope they will add Copilot soon.
IMHO there should be a clear line between what is on the computer and what is on the cloud, unless I opt-in otherwise for things like backup.
Similarly there should be a clear line when it comes to #AI. It must be clear when my data is local and when it is used for AI. What I do locally on my computer should not feed AI.
I once again repeat my call for opensource platform agnostic alternatives to #OneDrive that could work like it (I mean, on and offline access on Linux, Windows and mobile, with safety measures in place that respect the GDPR letter and spirit). Paid or not (I'll donate to libre projects of course).

Observation about #Microsoft#OneDrive. It doesn't understand dates in the 1980's. It keeps uploading files on the #Mac dated from that decade, successfully I might add, when it looks for things that need to be sync'd. Not a #bugs for most of us, but a #bug nonetheless.

Terrible user experience: Downloading or uploading a large number of files to or from #CloudStorage services like #DropBox and #OneDrive; I regret taking on this task.

I think I'm done with #Microsoft (M$) at this point. I won't be renewing my yearly #Microsoft365 subscription for #Office. I'll just have to get along without #Outlook. I stopped using #OneDrive a while ago. Glad I did or else they would have stolen all my personal documents by now for their AI.
I guess this means I'll have to stop using their email and Outlook too and settle for something crappy. The best alternative seems to be #Thunderbird. Ugh. Maybe I will pay for #ProtonMail then.
So I was working on a computer for my mom earlier. It's dual booting Debian #Linux with KDE because she wants to learn Linux, and I figured KDE resembles Windows. Anyway, I was setting up shortcuts so she could find all of her files she normally uses, but there's one problem. #Microsoft#OneDrive appears to do something weird. There's an empty file called "OneDrive", that appears to be a pointer, but the OneDrive "folder" isn't present. Anybody know where OneDrive "actually" stores files?
@gerowen Which is yet another reason why I hate #OneDrive, as it's some proprietary bs and not like #rsync or #Nextcloud where the files are being synced and mirrored transparently to the user...

I've been wavering on choosing a cloud provider to sync my data with. I really was hoping to use #ProtonDrive, but I really need a #Linux client. I was using #Google dive, but I really do not like how their system works.
So, I am going to go with #Dropbox I am not particularly excited to use them, but just yesterday, my wife needed an ID which she did not have. If my data was in the #cloud, I could have just shown it on the phone.
@my_actual_brain I do wish Proton would come out with a way to sync straight from the my machine without having to go through a web app. In the meantime, I've been using #cryptomator to backup to #OneDrive and it's worked well for me so far!
