TotalEnergies tried to silence Greenpeace France by intimidating them with court action, requiring the deletion of a report into TotalEnergies' 2019 greenhouse gas emissions.
TotalEnergies claimed their emissions were 455 million tonnes of CO2e. The Greenpeace report estimated actual CO2e emissions of 1,635,648,000 tonnes.
The Paris Judicial Court dismissed the summons, giving Greenpeace France a significant victory for freedom of speech, allowing them to question the extent of the climate impact caused by companies like TotalEnergies.
In the context of discussing "where's the UK government now?", Al Gore says,
"The government of the UK now is seemingly ... in the pocket of the fossil fuel companies."
and speaking more generally,
"The fossil fuel companies are way better at capturing politicians than they are at capturing emissions"
