I know it’s getting boring and I should be reasonable and go with #Mikrotik… But I guess #UniFi has this Apple-like bling and I’m gonna suffer a bit more with the old setup and eventually cash out on overkill #DreamMachine and some matching APs…🫣
It’s boiling down to #Ubiquiti vs #Mikrotik. #UniFi has more appeal, the app looks nice but I don’t need WiFi router (I already have 3 TP-Link Deco in a mesh) and the prices are hell. #Mikrotik looks about right, but man… WinBox looks like shit and the learning curve is probably steep… SEND HELP!🤡
@ssamulczyk take a look at mikrotik android app. Looks a bit better but it's still basically a wrapper for Api. If you are network guy then #mikrotik is great. Yes it's takes time to learn it but the gain is worth it. Basically the best approach to mikrotik is ssh+cli. If you just want an fire forget solution than #unfi UBIQUITI UXG-Lite will be good for you 🙂
Only a month to go to the #MikroTik Professionals Conference in Prague. We’ve managed to secure a major donation from a sponsor so we’ve extended the discounted pricing! Other major traders already booked tables. More in the wings signed up and we now have a FULL two days of speakers. So if you’re a MikroTik Trainer/Consultant wishing to speak all we can do now is put you on a reserve list in case anyone drops out at the last minute. So what’s stopping you from coming? 😁 https://mtpc.world
This morning, I had fun netbooting all the Mikrotik devices that were stuck or had OpenWRT installed on them. I managed to revive all of them except one that got struck by lightning, and I believe it's beyond recovery. Still, I'll have to take it apart to see what got fried.
I really like Mikrotik routers because they offer excellent performance, value, and long-term support. I've never had issues in my fairly simple setups, and they've always been rock-solid. More, they're European.
Has anyone built a #lora messenger device (with keyboard and screen? Wondering if LILYGO® TTGO Lora is worth a go but if someone's built something better, would like to take a look at that.
@ScaredyCat One of these days my #MikroTik LoraWan gateway will come in useful for someone around here in North Kent. Haven’t seen anyone use it for any serious amount of time yet though but they do say “build it and they will come” I guess. It wasn’t very expensive to buy the router and colinear antenna and uses up so little internet bandwidth I really don’t care if it just sits there and broadcasts away to nobody. 😁
Didn't realize my wireless plan capped tethering speeds, but now it makes sense. When your phone gets ~10-15 mbps and your tethered computer gets .5 or .6 consistently, you know they're screwing w/ the service you paid for.
Welp, I'm ashamed it took me this long to realize, but changing the TTL on my computer seems to have released the throttling.
Ok, peeps. I have been told I should throw away my Asus setup and buy Ubiquiti instead.
Anyone want to give me advice? I want a router that doesn't need much wifi, and then nodes all over the house. My house has concrete walls and floor, so I need one unit for every room. I will connect all/most using wired.
My main reason to switch is that Asus suck and roaming. As in, I need to turn off and on wifi, to get the closest access point.
I am not a professional, but are a fan of fast uplinks.
OK, I have no idea how to make a reverse access point on my #Mikrotik HaPLite. Whatever I do in the settings, I lose connection to the router and the only thing left is to reset it to factory settings. And I only want the simplest thing, to have it connected to an existing WiFi and share it over its ethernet ports.
If there's one thing I really, really dislike about the #Mikrotik#SR-10U it's the hideous equipment mounting process. Nobody is mounting non-standard height bits of kit in a rack so having to fight with the nut locations whilst trying to mount a router or switch just makes is so much worse.
Fedi, my internet router sucks, drops wifi every few minutes, recommend me a different one?
Barest requirements:
I need to be able to hit a button and cut off the littleun's MAC address.
I'm buying it once and then I'm done, I'm not signing up for anything. If that means buying an old pre-capitalism-collapse one off eBay then fine.
If I need to screw with it then I'm going to 192.168.1.1, I'm not installing any damn apps. On my current Netgear one I have to tell my phone to pretend to be a desktop before it lets me in and it sucks.
I don't wanna screw around with OpenWRT or custom firmware or whatevs, I do enough of that on every other bloody thing I own and I don't have time for another hobby.
Nice to have:
Have the "Turn off the kid's internet" button press itself at a certain time. My current router has a really crappy thing where you can choose times and days for the littleun to have internet or not, I don't want that - I only want the kid to have internet when I say she can have internet, not when the router says it's time for internet. So right now inside the parental controls menu the internet is blocked on all time slots, and when she says dad can I have Scratch time I go to 192.168.1.1 on my phone and flip the "Parental controls are ON" toggle, but my problem is I forget to turn the block back on so she's sneaking Scratch time early in the morning, so I want that button to press itself at night. I want "Internet off until ask Dad" functionality.
@ifixcoinops I’m surprised nobody has mentioned #MikroTik yet. #RouterOS is every bit as competent as the stuff I found in enterprise-grade gear, back when that was my thing.
I get by with a single HAP in my 1-bedroom flat, so can’t offer firsthand experience on the mesh capabilities - but the popularity of MikroTik gear among small scale WISPs may offer some reassurance.
Our big annual week long camping holiday has been booked for months. Chose the first week of August in the English Riviera so as to catch some of that sunshine it’s famous for. Been here two days and have had to deploy the storm straps due to torrential rain and 50kph winds. Too worried to go adventuring out in case it all blows away while we’re out! 😂. So we’re staying indoors chilling on bacon sandwiches and Netflix instead thanks to the #MikroTik LHG-LTE. 😁
