#IDMastodon #PublichHealth #COVID19 doesn’t always affect people the same way. If someone gets sick, for example, not everyone in that person’s close social circle will get infected—even if they recently spent time together. But why? @Nature

This Ottawa-based science fiction convention has consistently had stronger COVID policies than most #medical conferences since the start of the #pandemic.
They survey people (prior to each convention) interested in attending, and cater the policies to what people want. You may be surprised. In light of new variants and what might be around in the fall... Some highlights:

  • "The clearest message we received was that mandatory #masking was an absolutely necessary part of having a safe and welcoming environment."
  • "There was also mixed support for ensuring that attendees are vaccinated, but since provincial governments have stopped supporting the various #vaccine verification systems, we don’t want to promise something we can’t deliver. Can*Con will encourage all attendees to be up to date on their vaccines and boosters."

These combined SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza A/B home lateral flow tests could be quite useful.
How would it change management?
How well might it facilitate early detection for those in which antivirals such as Oseltamivir are indicated and treatment needs to be started within 48hrs of symptom onset?
Could false -ves delay treatment where people avoid seeking better diagnostic tests?

@Nature # As a high-risk group, healthcare workers are continuously exposed to infection and its consequences during clinical work. Faced with the complex social environment and high workload of pandemic prevention, even in HCWs with mild infection, impairment of attentional function persists and affects later clinical work. the long-term colonization and systemic response to 🦠 may lead to the impairment of the orienting & executive control networks.

Acute cases indicates a concerning association with cognitive deficits in the general population, regardless of clinical course and severity or with no association with any blood inflammatory marker. A recent study suggests that even in mild cases , infection promote systemic endothelial dysfunction, impair the homeostatic mechanism of neurovascular coupling and promote white matter damage.

"The ongoing outbreak of H5N1 avian flu virus looks a lot like a public-health problem that the United States should be well prepared for.

Although this version of flu is relatively new to the world, scientists have been tracking H5N1 for almost 30 years. Researchers know the basics of how flu spreads and who tends to be most at risk...Yet the U.S. is struggling to mount an appropriate response."
